WARNING: Due to the graphic nature of the attached photos of a destroyed 931 turbo K26 unit, viewer discretion is advised. May induce severe depression and sadness for the bonafide 931 enthusiast.
This is a K26 turbo unit from a series 2 931. I acquired this unit in a package deal with a bunch of other 931 bits. Michigan Turbo quoted me nearly $700 to rebuild, which I chose not to do. The photos below illustrate why the cost would have been so high.
Compressor wheel
Heat shield
Turbine wheel
Turbine housing

pft. That's nothing. I coated the entire hotside housing with molten aluminum and took out all of the turbine blades in the process.
fyi - I have an extra series 1 compressor wheel if you or anybody wants it. _________________ 1980 931S

P.S. Nick, how about the heat shield and hot side housing? Do you think that housing is totally shot? _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

Sure I can throw it in. I have a box of turbo guts that I'll check out to see if there is anything else worthwhile in there. _________________ 1980 931S

Nick, that would be great...mainly the compressor wheel, heat shield, and turbine housing are what I need to put together another good turbo unit. Would be nice to have one sitting on the shelf since I have two 931s...
Let me know when you're ready to ship it out so I can get the paypal to you. Thx! _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

I just realized - you have a series 2 cold side housing right? No luck then. The compressor wheels are matched to the housing. I don't have an extra series 1 housing. I'll send it out all the same though if you want it. _________________ 1980 931S

Go ahead and send it. Actually I have what I thought was a series I and what I thought was a series II, but the part numbers on the compressor housing as well as the turbine housing are identical. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

the heat shield is common, as is the cracked exhaust housing,
the only thing I want to know is what got sucked into the intake to cause the damage to that piece. _________________ 3 928s, |

That's pretty much what mine looked like. That destruction of the compressor wheel combined with the small spherical indentations in my #3 piston and the matching marks in the combustion chamber on #3 lead me to believe that somebody had managed to pop the "anti tamper ball" (which was missing by the way) into the intake while trying to adjust the CO. All the teeth on my turbine wheel were chipped also. Not a pretty scene when I did the teardown on mine. I think the incident started a few months earlier. I had only had the car a couple of weeks when all of a sudden the turbo got loud, then there was a knocking from the engine. I pulled over and shut down. I waited a little while and restarted and the knocking went away after a few seconds. After that it ran fine for several months. During this time, though, it had started to smoke a little then got progressively worse. I ran a compression check and found #3 was pretty low. Only when I got the head off did I see all the damage. The top of the piston had mushroomed out and had worn the bore oval. There was significant scoring on the cylinder walls. _________________ Tom in Tucson
