I installed a replacement hatch for my seperated and leaking rear glass today. The replacement came from a 951. When I turn the hatch release key, the new hatch will come up a bit, but it won't totally release. No matter how hard I pull, it won't open. If I loosen the mounting bolts on the leading edge of the hatch I can jiggle it open.

Any ideas? Is this a symptom of the hatch pegs being too long or short? Is there any ajustment in the release mechanisms that might allow them to open more and release the pegs? Looking for any tips that may speed up my trouble shooting. Thanks guys.

Are the new hatches prongs and lock assembly the same as the old hatches?

I measured the hatch prongs with a caliper, the cone on the end of each prong is the same on the new and old. The lock assembly has not been replaced, same before and after.

I have a similar problem every now and then with mine. My technique, which you may have already tried is pushing down hard on one side, and then try to pull the other side.

When I replaced my hatch, my pins seemed to settle into place over time, maybe if you drive it around for a few days it might start being easier to open.

The catches the pins go into are moveable (a bit tight though) after you loosen off the nuts.

The catch assembly mounted on the body has enlarged holes to allow for adjustment. It may be necessary to crawl inside your rear with a 10mm spanner and loosen the nuts to move the catch while an assistant turns the key and lifts the hatch.
Found this a real PITA but they can be adjusted.
Also if the rubber cone in the bottom of the catch is shot the pins wont centralise well and tend to catch on the locking arm when released. And it will rattle over bumps too.

Thanks for all the tips guys, definitely some things to try. I think I may start with trying to adjust the receivers a bit, sounds like a bit of chore, but it will be nice to get it working.

If you slacken off the recivers a bit, then gently lower the hatch, the pins will help to locatate and centralize the catches (a bit of jiggling may be required). Then all you have to do is tighten the nuts without letting the catches move...

It's quite a fiddly adjustment. You may need a few goes before you get it 'right'. I did!

I would say that it's not your recievers..you didn't move them. But you did add a new seal which will be thicker the the old worn out one. I would try extending the catch pin a few threads.

10mm and loosen the catches. A little difficult doing on your back. Do not twist the hatch. You may damage the glass/frame adherence???

That's a good tip!

I think its the same seal before and after since I changed the hatch, and the seal is on the body.

When I did mine, I located the hatch without the pins installed, and of course without the shocks hooked up. I sorta wiggled and pressed down on the hatch until it was laying in the seal the way it wanted to, then tightened it up, then installed the pins.

You might also lengthen the pins a bit before you try to latch again. When they get hung up in there, it's because they are too tight. . .IMO the correct adjustment allows for 1/8 inch or so of "give" in the seal when you press down hard on the rear of a latched hatch.
