I sold my 88 924s but luckily I found an 87 in as good if not better condition. I suspect that the seal on the water heat exchanger is bad due to oil in the coolant but could be a BHG. I would like to try the gasket/oring fix first before i panic and pull the head. Anyone know the part numbers and a source for them

It isn't a gasket. The oil cooler housing and heat exchanger is a series of washers, and seals built into a stack of a specific height, after the heat exchanger is dropped into the housing. You need to buy an oil cooler resealing kit/set.

I suggest that you obtain the Porsche factory technical bulletin covering the correct assembly and height of the seal stacks (there are two to be built). You will also need the OPRV alignment tool to reassemble the oil cooler housing to the block.

Does anyone know the alignment Part number for the 87 924s?

Part numbers and detailed procedure are on Clark's Garage HERE*.

Good luck, let us know how it goes.

*CAUTION: this procedure is NGIGA (not guaranteed if Gohim approved).

Hell, I think I will take it to a local porsche repair shop. Anyone have any idea on average cost of doing this procedure?

According to the Clark's article referenced above, it should take no more than two hours.

Use caution when going to a shop for this service. Make sure that they own both OPRV alignment tools, and make them show them to you before chosing them to do the work. Ask if they know about the oil cooler housing, and OPRV supercession.

Two hours mechanical work here in CA can cost as much as $125-$150 an hour.

The tool costs less than $25, and the oil cooling housing reseal set about $50-$75. A Porsche TB bound edition with the procedure will cost less than $25. Be aware the the oil cooler housing that was originally installed at the factory on many cars has been superceeded as well as the OPRV itself. The newer type oil cooler housing makes setting the seal stacks, and sealing the housing easier, and more reliable. If you need a replacment oil cooler housing, you should be able to find a used newer type one for $50 or less. The 87 924S engine may contain the older 3-piece OPRV, which Porsche recommends replacing, or the newer current type 1-piece OPRV (about $300).

There is a guy here with a real good rep. Does a lot of these and I have some good friends that recommend him. Carerra sports. He quoted me $270.00 for the whole job less parts. If this is indeed the problem then worse case is $600.00 with the valve.

$270 for a job that takes less than two hours? You must be loaded with dough to go to that guy. So, you're saying that the guy is going to charge you close to $400, for the whole job, minus the OPRV, and you're okay with that?
