It appears that 931 fuel filters have the same fittings on either end. Both my 80 and 82 were this way and both cars had filter installed backwards when I bought them. So, always make sure the arrow on the new filter points toward the fuel distributor.

By that, you mean pointing toward the rear of the car, right?
Right.

dont swap ends with the one that is in there, replace it with a new one, but the arrow is supposed to point backwards

Yeah, that's a common misconception - the '81 931 I just picked up had the same problem.

Of course, if you just turn it around, all the junk that it's been catching will now be flushed into your fuel distributor!!!

Still waiting to hear Dan weigh in on what he was considering "backwards". . .

The way I understand it is
Left hand drive it points toward the rear of the car.
Right hand drive, points to the front.
Follow the line, left hand drive goes back, along the firewall, then forward to fuel distributor.
Right hand drive goes directly foward to fuel distibutor.

80 turbos had a split where some used both female fittings and some used one male one female but in left hand drive, either will point towards the rear of the car.

Where is the cheapest place to get a 931 fuel filter from, that doesn't take forever to ship?
