In order for the car to run I need to run power to both the positive side of the coil and to the positive side of the fuel pump.... Relay or fuse possible?
It will start fine without...but as soon as you take it off the "crank" position..it dies without the jumped power. _________________ 1976 924

Maybe its time to get rid of the ignition switch, if you are intending to in the long run anyway. _________________ Toofah King Bad

You have a burned out ballast resistor.
The car should probably have two, one mounted on each side of the ignition coil.
Power to the coil runs through the ballast resistor when the ignition switch is in the run position, and bypasses the ballast resistor when the ignition switch is in the start position.
That's why the engine will run while you hold the key at start, and dies when you release the key to the run position of the ignition switch.
Check the wiring between the battery, the alternator and the starter. Corroded wiring due to battery acid dropping onto the wiring harness below the battery tray drain caused the wiring problem that eventually caused the ballast resistor to burn.
I had the same problem over twenty five years ago in my early (02/76) 924. |
