Hello All,
I recently bought a 924 on ebay. I have to get car ready for the UK’s MOT (government vehicle inspection). I’ve got it ready now and the last thing was new tires all round.
I drove the car home, parked it on the driveway and went back to it about 30minutes later. It wouldn’t start!
I looked on this forum and I took advice (smoothie) to pump the gas pedal and it worked after about 6 pumps!
I drove car into my garage and now when I restart the car it does not idle very well, it tries to cut out and stall. It has never idled very well but now its got bad.
I used STP Injection cleaner during my last tank fill up and I am wondering if this could have blocked up the pipes with released dirt?
Could it be the fuel filter that’s blocked?
My thinking is the WUR is not functioning because the car never idled very well.
I will try to do a diagnostic on the car at the weekend but I am a complete novice at this.
In the past the car has had the Hot Start problem fixed
Basically my main concern is to get the car passed the MOT check and then I am free (for another year at least) to concentrate on more specific faults with the car. Obviously the fuel and injection system needs a good overhaul but I need a quick-fix solution.
Thanks |

With regards to the car not restarting after 30 mins, sounds like the hot start prob has not been totally fixed.
Would it start again after a few hours (when the engine had cooled down)
Do you know what was done to fix the hot start prob?
Sorry can't help you with anything else but im sure someone can. _________________ 1984 NA Guards Red |

+1 to what Jim said, plus:
Any misfunctioning of the WUR would generally only manifest itself when the car's warming up. If the poor idle persists with the engine warm, then it's most probably not related to the WUR.
Also, I think you may have misunderstood Smoothie's starting procedure. It's not so much a matter of 'pumping' the accelerator, as keeping your foot on it, or at least past halfway open, whilst cranking the engine (and then releasing it before the revs go through the roof!) _________________ 1985 Porsche 924 'Lux', Kalahari Beige (my ex)

you can try depressing the metering plate under the big rubber boot (gently) a few times, when the WUR in my 931 went south this was the only way to get the car to start when hot... after running for a few minutes, the idle should stabilize somewhat...even with a bad wur.. _________________ Eric

Carefully scrutinize every last piece of rubber plumbed into the intake, and replace when in doubt. . .sounds like a potential vacuum leak. _________________ Toofah King Bad

Pumping the pedal provides a richer mix, so that should help more if the engine is getting a too-lean mix.
Holding the pedal down without pumping opens the air metering plate more and clears vapour lock from the lines quicker if you have the hot start problem - similar to manually pushing on the air metering plate, but easier. -This lets in both more air and more fuel flow without enrichening the mix above what the a:f setting and wur normally provide.
Yes, first suspect vacuum leak/s if the pedal pumping works while the steady hold-down does not.
Don't play with the mix setting until all vacuum leaks have been resolved and the wur has been checked (need a CIS pressure tester for this). _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."
