Okay I think it's safe to say the seals in the turbo have gone and now I need to remove it.

The car is in my driveway on stands and the easiest way to remove it is with the exhaust still attached (the exhaust studs are looking fragile)

What I need to know is how is the turbo attached (other than to the exhaust) and do I also need to remove the wastegate (hopefully not).

Diagrams more than welcome

Time to get a manual, the turbo R&R is far too complicated IMO without one. Exhaust will need to be dropped, and wastegate removed. Aside from the conenction to the manifold, the turbo is attached to a bracket that is bolted to the block.

Also gather up your hardware. . .turbo-mani studs and nuts, turbo-downpipe studs and nuts, Jpipe-mani studs and nuts, Jpipe-wastegate studs and nuts, wastegate-exhaust studs and nuts, plus gaskets for each joint, all oil feed and drain gaskets/o-rings, and the rubber elbow for the turbo recirc valve.

Biggest PITA job I ever did on any car. But worth it!

Good luck,

rasta

If you also are nearing the end of your clutch's life, I suggest you pull the motor.

you dont need to pull the wastegate, but I would recommend pulling as much as you can and draining the oil, imo it isnt a technically job and is very straight forward, just awkward.

I wouldn't go to all the trouble of pulling the turbo without refreshing the wastegate.

Wastegate R&R consists of replacing the diaphram, spring, and most likely the studs and definately the gaskets and locking nuts. like the rest, not terribly difficult, just a bit tricky and theres a good chance the studs and nuts will be rusty...
get the work shop manual, its well worth it...

Step 1. Soak everything in PB Blaster overnight (at least).

You'll need good 12mm and 15mm sockets (and a u-joint + extensions) & open/closed end wrenches from what I remember.

The wastegate is a real nightmare if you have a 79/80 with the vent tube that follows the control line. The vent line bolt is in a terrible location to get to on the wastegate.

I agree though, you should take it off and check the diaphram when you pull the turbo.

Just to give you guys an update.

I managed to get the Tubo off it wasn't to bad really. Thought the oil seals had gone and it needed servicing but unfortunately when the head was rebuilt (before my ownership) it looks like something had been droped down the manifold and has bent and chipped everything in the heart of the turbo. I've been quoted £595 + taxes (approx $1200 + taxes) to have it rebuilt.

All is not lost a member of the 924 owners club has come to my rescue with a spare turbo (don't know much about it's history other than was working when removed from Car) but best of all he doesn't want anything for it (bargin).

My plan now is to get her back together get her though her annual test if the new turbo is OK.

What did you all remove to get it off?

Ouch! Had mine rebuilt at Evergreen Turbo in FL, cost was $515 including all the updates and a replacement turbine housing. The work was excellent.

That's a great price would be about £260 for me. Well fingers crossed the replacement is ok then it's been a real bargin. if not i'll have to have the detail of where you sent yours and weigh up the cost of postage.

Really??? Only had to remove the water pump and cam belt? No removal of crossmember, cylinder head or anything else? Great news if that's all that's required!

That is really great news. You made my day. I've been procrastinating over doing this because of all the work I thought was involved. Doesn't sound too bad now.

Here's the website for Evergreen if you need them: http://www.evergreenturbo.com/
Hope you don't need it.
