|
|
I have been trying to diagnose a starting problem for a little bit now. When it is starting sometimes it will act as though it is running on 2 or 3 cylinders then it after a little revving it runs on all 4. I figured it might be the inductive pickup in the distributor so I bought a new one but the mounting holes are totally different. The old pickup was so old it crumbled when removing it so I'm in a bind.

You can see in the picture at the link above that the two coils are both setting the same way but the mounting holes are in a different position.
My question is has anybody had this problem? Where did you get the correct part? Are there any alternatives like Pertronix or at least points? I'd like to keep my distributor because it has the dual port vacuum canister that I use for my turbo setup.
Thanks.[/url] _________________ 1977 Porsche 924 - going away...

I'm just wondering if you don't have some clogged injectors...

in the picture I showed them upside down so you can see how the mounting position is. As far as the injectors, I replaced everything in the fuel system because of horrible running. But right now, I'm not trying to diagnose the problem. I'd just like to get the distributor put back together and into the car with a new pickup coil. _________________ 1977 Porsche 924 - going away...

Whups, that sucks. Paragon has the correct ones... looks like you'll want this one, for a '77:

What was the Bosch part # on the one you got? According to the link, it should be the same as mine, which was the 01503 (linked above). Did you get the 01502, maybe? _________________ Vaughan Scott

I bought mine at O'Reilly's Auto Parts. The part is a borg warner part # ME529. The old pickup doesn't have any numbers anywhere. The new pickup has the numbers 2651 8F.
924RACR, where would this number be? _________________ 1977 Porsche 924 - going away...

Those are Bosch part #'s; if you don't have a Bosch part, can't help you there.
Did the parts store list any different parts for the various years? I'd start there... _________________ Vaughan Scott

I had them check all the way up to 79 and they were all the same. Is it possible that they mirrored their mold? I can't figure it out. Tomorrow I'm going to give Paragon a call and talk to their techs. Maybe they can send me a picture of their part so I can compare. _________________ 1977 Porsche 924 - going away...

Nobbi,
this goes in the distributor and tells the coil when to fire,
is it possible to use the new one as a template and drill and tap new holes to mount this new one, may need to take the distributor out to do this though _________________ 3 928s, |

Well it obviously isn't the right one as you said, It's not even shaped the same the old one is completly round and the new one has two flat spots on the sides as if it were to fit into something with two walls.

I took it back to O'Reilly's today. I'm going to give Paragon a call about their pickup. I'm also going to call a Porsche place thats about 1.5 hours from me and see if they have (or can get) a pickup for me.
I'd like to do edis like megajolt but I'm unsure of who sells them. I already have the coil packs out of a GM van. _________________ 1977 Porsche 924 - going away...

Just an update, 924RACR was right. The bosch # is 01503. Now I have the joy of putting the distributor back together in 90 degree heat.
Thanks for the help everybody. _________________ 1977 Porsche 924 - going away...
