Any tips on bringing back the lustrious shine of guards red instead of guards pink.

A gent on another forum is really a god at bringing back dull paint, and my roommate contacted him for me and he wrote back this:

Quote:
I can tell you right now that, on your friend's Porsche, you'll likely want to have a professional work on that car. The reason I say that is because it's going to have an enamal finish versus clearcoat, and enamal is MUCH easier to burn off the car, especially if it's faded out.

The bright side is that an enamal finish will come back to life better than a clearcoat finish will, but it will shorten the life of the paint. Basically, the only way to shine it up is to literally strip away that faded layer of paint, which is what you'd do with compound and glaze. But like I said, for somebody who's never done this before I would definitely NOT recommend trying it on a faded enamal finish. You'll burn the paint off the car in the blink of an eye if you're not careful.

LMK if you still want opinions and I'll point you in some directions, but I can't stress enough the danger in buffing an enamal finish if someone doesn't have any experience in it.

Absolutely! And in fact, being 26 years old, there's even more risk of burning the paint off as the damage is likely pretty deep. Also the paint can get "bleached" out by the sun, making it a little paler than it was originally. What color is this car? I once wheeled out a completely flat red mid-80's Isuzu, and though the shine back real nice, it ended up being more pink than red.

Does anyone know what type of paint is used from the factory if it has a clearcoat or not?

The paint is pretty faded on the hood, and roof, but the sides are decent still.

I think all the non-metallic paints from the early 80's are non-clearcoat. The advice above sounds pretty solid. It is very easy to burn off paint with a buffer & compound. I don't know how much a pro would charge to buff it out?

Maybe I'll just buy some enamal buff and go at it, the hood is the worst, and hopefully ill get it all repainted some time in the future..

EASY way to tell if you have clear coat or single stage paint( color)....sand a spot very lightly with 600 grit dry paper is a door jam or some where it won't show.

If you get white sanding dust ..it's clear coat..if you get red dust you have straight paint.

I think it may have already been resprayed.. so who knows.

When I took my car for a body repair estimate they spoke of a two stage paint job or something.

Two stage paint is just Base coat /clear coat. Single stage is when it is just a color coat Like enamel, acriylic enamel or urathane.

Flosho,

What year is it ?
Did they say Two Pack or 2K ??
Have a look at the sticker in your car and let us know the colour / color number.
It may have started as Acrylic but has beeen resprayed as enamyl.
There are different ways to tell but let me know the original colour ID first.

81 924t. The original sticker is gone I believe so theres no way to tell really without doing what Porschev explain.

Not sure what you're asking about the two pack or 2k. I had a quote done to get a small dent in my door fixed, not a entire paint job.

Have a look to see if you have any details that say

Part number 027 Guards Red or L M3A

Looking at the 924 PDF files they were still using Glasurit Acrylic not to be confused with Enamel paints

Have you thought about having it detailed? I have seen quite a few nice refurb. jobs, and the paint looked like crap to start with.

You might find the color code on a plate near the fuel filter. The same plate will have the vin if it's there.
