| The CV jounts in my 924S (87) softly howl when i coast. This does not happen in my 88 LeMans. You can also feel slight lateral play in the shafts. (my other porsches shafts are very solid even though it has twice the miles. I took the cv jjoints apart and cleande and repacked them. There were no cracks, galling or visible wear on the balls, and the race grooves were not wallowed. Shined, but not wallowed. After repack joints behave the same. What is going on here? |

Lateral play is a must, or the axle would bend the first time you hit a bump (as the wheel moves up and down the length changes).
Rotational play is the sign of a bad CV joint.

You mention both a chatter and a howl.. A chatter while coasting on a bumpy road can also be due to a broken or bent locating spring (aka- guide spring) on a rear brake caliper. A howl would be something else. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."

I'd check the rear wheel bearings too if they haven't been done recently.
Noise travels and can lead to incorrect diagnosis.
I spent several days on another motor chasing noises. Turned out it was the harmonic balance on the crank after I had rebuilt the alt bearings, disconnected the air con, replaced the leaky PS pump and was looking evilly at the water pump when I checked the harmonic. _________________ Porsche 924 1984 (UK import) NA

I spent 3 weekends trying to work out where the noise was coming from on the back of the wifes car. 3 different people agreed it was coming from the drivers side wheel, and was related to engine speed.
Turned out to be a broken mud flap on passenger side hitting the tyre.
Does the noise change when you go round corners? ie are left hand bends quiet butright hand bends just as loud? |

| maybe discription was not good. The horizontal play in the shaft is good and normal. it slides back and forth. You are calling it (rotational) play, that is what I am experiencing to a slight degree. Is it normal to see a slight degree of this? |
