|
|
Just found out about this yesterday...
It was always a big pain to keep project cars insured, cause otherwise you'd have to surrender your plates (and then your pride and joy gets towed away). For more recent cars, at least in MD, the additional pain is having to re-register and re-inspect it every time you take the plates off.
Now, I had to pull it out of my agent with pliers and a blowtorch, but apparently Progressive (and others I'm sure) offers "Storage" option. You keep your tags, but you loose liability; your payment gets slashed by ~90%. Funny thing is, the way it works, you get comprehensive insurance with a $500 deductible instead, so if a tree falls on it, you get paid (despite having liability only insurance while it's not in "storage").
If at any point you want to drive it again, you just call the insurance agent, and you're golden. It's a hassle to "store" cars for only a few days, but if you intend to keep it parked for a month or more, it can save you a bunch of cash.
So, if you have a bunch of project cars that you keep out on the street, and you don't want to pay $80 a month for the luxury of having tags, there's your option. You can't drive it, of course, but you're free to work on it, keep it on the street, and it's somewhat safe from fire, vandalism and theft.
This also works well if you have a winter-only beater, summer-only hotrod, or if you go on a month-long vacation. Or if you're like me, and you never drive your "other" three cars cause work is 3 minutes away and your wife does the shopping _________________ 1982 924 Turbo, now Lemon |

Yeah, that's a great tip. One of my best friends runs his own insurance agency, so he keeps me in the loop on these things. A bunch of my car buddies up here regularly switch between "storage" (winter) and "street" (summer) policies for precisely that reason. I thought it was fairly common knowledge, but maybe only if you have an inside tip! _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

I've spent 3 days digging around the internet trying to find ways to save some cash, only to stumble on an obscure reference to this option (something about State Farm offering a discount). My agent didn't mention it after spending 20 minutes on the phone with me, even after I told him that I don't drive, period - and my wife only drives her new car Had to specifically ask him about the State Farm thing to hear "Oh, yeah, we can do that, too".
Now I have just the MR2 and the Miata as driving cars. Hopefully in the next two months I'll clean up the 924 enough to swap it with the MR2 as my "just in case I have to go somewhere and the weather is too bad for a bike" car. It costs half as much to insure, has an OK trunk, back seats, and a turbo _________________ 1982 924 Turbo, now Lemon |

I've been doing that with my cars that I put in storage for decades (State Farm). _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"
