what are some common problems with these engines? i will more than likely be buying one in the next week, its in really good condition but not running. i just wanted to ask what to look for, its only a hundred dollars, so.... where would be a good place to get an engine for it? and what years and models are interchangeable? im not sure if it is turbo'ed or not yet, but i will know soon.
EDIT: its a 1979, i hope this is the right place to post.

This post should have been placed in General Discusssions.

The car that you are writing about is a 924, not a 924S, and most probably it is a 924 NA (normally aspired). The 931 (924 Turbo) was not introduced to the U.S. Market until the 1980 model year.

The 2.0L 924 engine is fairly bulletproof (unless run out of water or oil), and the engine in the car you may be getting may only need servicing, and/or some minor repair such as a timing belt, or waterpump. But, the Bosch CIS fuel injection system that these cars came with does not like sitting around. Commonly you will find gummed up fuel pumps and fuel distributors on cars that have been sitting two years or more. Fuel distributors are expensive, and cannot be serviced, or rebuilt, they have to be replaced. A replacement fuel pump can easily cost $200 or more, and the fuel distributor $400-$500 (rebuilt) or $900 (new).

Bought mine as a non-runner too.

Simply to work on, and shouldn't cause you too much grief especially considering how helpful people are on here.

You just need to be systematic as you work through your tests.

wells heres the deal, two of the cylinders lost compression, do you think that some valves or rockers, lifters, anything could just be stuck? i think this is what happened because it has been parked for a long time and supposedly ran when parked last...

Depends on which 2 have lost compression. Are they next to each other, like cylinder 1 & 2 or 3&4?
That would normally point to the Head Gasket leaking between them.

You could do a leak-down test, bascially tou pressurise each cylinder with an air compressor, then hunt the leak.

Yes, but depending on exact build, the intake valves may be smaller and have a poor (economy) cam pushing them.

Verify the compression results yourself, and if that is indeed the case, consider pulling the motor that's in there and rebuilding it. It's not that hard with access to the right equipment, and you'll have a fresh motor.

PS - put your location in your profile, please!

the wiring on this thing is a joke, i have all of the schematics but wiring is definately something i am not good with. he tried using some sort of aftermarket harness, maybe a painless one. but man it is a hack job. does any one have some pictures of the relay board with so i can sort of see how things should go? that would be very helpful, also what do i need to connect to hook up a trigger starter? so i can bypass the ignition? i just want to do a compression check to see if i can get it going, im going to get a 77 parts car soon and maybe i can pull the head off of mine and use its lower end if i have some bad cylinders.

this guy new nothing about wiring. nothing on the relay board is connected, i was up pretty late studying the schematics trying to figure it all out and im comin along. i would like to know what wires(color, what they power) are supposed to be connected to the male g and h sections of the relay board. so if anyone can help that would definately help, i have no power to anything still and the battery is charged. all of the relays and fuses are connected. and hopefully right.
