|

Hey everyone... It's been a while.
My 924's been running great, and I've put about 5000 miles on it since getting it rebuilt. Today I went out for a drive to get some new spark plugs, and made the mistake of turning down my stereo.
Darn.
I heard this funning whining noise, so I put it in neutral and got out. It's definitely coming from the rear passenger side, in the general area of my fuel pump. I can't pinpoint it to make sure it's my fuel pump though, and I don't want to drop $250 on a pump if I don't need it. Any ideas? Fuel delivery seems to be doing fine, and the pump was brand new when I got the car going...
One other question - when I take my engine up above about 3800-4000 RPM, even for just a brief little bit, I get the smell of burning oil. Is that normal, just blow-by?
Thanks, as always! _________________ 1978 924

You couldn't leave well-enough alone, right? You had the fix in place for the noisey fuel pump but had to undo it.
Noisey fuel pumps on the 924 are normal - especially the OE Bosch main pump. Noise alone isn't enough to diagnose a problem with them. -Even the noise getting louder isn't necessarilly enough. A more definite sign is when the pump sound changes from steady to changing pitch as if it's speeding up and slowing down - this will probably be accompanied by some crappei running and if you have a CIS tester, will show as fluctuating fuel pressures. -So, if the noise is steady+loud, don't worry.
The oil smell could be from a leaky breather hose or oil dripping on and burning off a hot part of the engine. Check for deteriorated breather line/s. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."

Alright.. so I read in your post, "Turn the damn radio back up". Great, will do.
I love cheap fixes.
I'll look around for leaks. I did replace the original seal around my dip stick with something that kind of fit (couldn't find a real one), but that might be leaking a little...
Thanks Smoothie. _________________ 1978 924

Well, went to go turn my radio back up and fix the fuel pump, and....the fuel pump doesn't make any noise anymore anyways, so there we go.

| my old autobody teacher told me a rabbit fuelpump can be used if you swap the fittings, of course he told me this after i spent 250 on my fuel pump and had no reason to investigate this anymore. |

I never really thought of looking in to other fuel pumps, but it makes sense that any in-line fuel pump like that would work as long as it's close to the same specs. I'll look into that if mine ends up dying.
As to the relay - I've had to replace that once already, but when that goes the fuel pump doesn't make noise at all... _________________ 1978 924
