hey guys this may be a stupid question but there are alot of posts on this subject and i just wanted a definitive answer, i am running a 79 924 na and i am going to set the timing, so u set the marks on th oil pump, cam shaft and flywheel to tdc and the use the timing light on the flywheel marks, what i don't understand is when u talk about -3 setting on the timing light, i have looked at a couple and they all have advance and it goes from 0 to 60 or so degrees, so how do u set it to -3 which would correspond to like 5 BTDC with the vaccum hose attached, like i said this might be stupid question, i am kind of a newb when it comes to correctly setting the timing on a car. thanks guys

The dial on an advance timing light shows the number of degrees before the mark you are looking at. They haven't yet invented one that can predict the future...

So if you are hitting the Z mark, and the dial is on 10, it is 10BTDC.

Cars requiring ATDC settings will have the appropriate markings on the flywheel or crank pulley. If the mark isn't there, you can make a mark yourself, with something like this:

In fact, you could even print out this very pic in the size you need. . .
