|
|
Hey guys, I'm in the midst of adjusting my rear drum brakes. The problem is that I can't seem to get that big castle nut off. It spins, but the drum spins with it. Is that normal? It doesnt seem like it's getting very much looser. Any ideas?

The drum slides over the splined stub axle, so those two parts will turn together. That nut has massive torque on it. . .I used an air-powered impact wrench to knock it loose. _________________ Toofah King Bad

Argh. Im gonna have to throw in the towel on this one. At 140 pounds, I cant exactly get much torque on the nut. I guess I will have to have someone use an inpact gun.

Have you tried using a pipe or your jack handle (if it's round & hollow) as an extension over the end of your breaker bar? The add'l length will help you exert more torque... _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

Ideola,
No, I haven't, but I never thought of using a jack handle! I don't have any pipes, so that's why I haven't tried it yet. I'll definately try the jack handle tmr.

Anything you can do to (safely) get some more extension on your breaker bar. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

Since when do you have to remove that nut to adjust the rear brakes? _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"

Rear brakes are adjusted from the other side of the drum. There should be 2 rectangular rubber plugs covering the holes that are used to turn the star wheel adjusters for each brake shoe. _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"

Other than following pauls advice, to get that rear nut loose we welded a 10 foot bar to the end of a nut. That was after we twisted the end of the bar one of the times we undid it.... just got mad and welded the bar to the back of the nut.
