|

I've been thinking about replacing the stock radiator fans, with either one bigger, slim fan, or two equal sized slim radiator fans.
Has anyone done this or have experience with this, or suggestions.. _________________ [This Space For Rent] |

I've done it. Used a single Perma Cool 3000 cfm fan from Summit Racing, item number PRM-19008 if this link doesn't work:
http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=PRM%2D19008&N=700+4294924500+400006+4294838842+4294891681+4294775280+4294774135+115&autoview=sku
The thing that is great is the low amp draw combined with the high cfm, plus it is a very light fan. With a small extension to drop the lower mounting hole on the fan an inch, the holes in the perma cool fan will bolt up on the rad top and bottom. That will hold the fan in place very solidly. Then I used the supplied zip ties on the side holes of the fan to stabilize it through the rad core. I can post pics if you need them. _________________ 1987 951 - M193 Version for Japan

I have a single slim fan on the racecar, works great for that. Not adequate for street traffic jam usage, but would be fine for anything less than the Woodward Dream Cruise (10 mile 8 lane traffic jam/block party/cruise-in)... _________________ Vaughan Scott

Recently changed to new 16" slim fan on white NA-turbo and as Chrenan stated, great to see very low current draw combined with good cooling. _________________ '83 924 2.6 16v Turbo, 470hp

So all these fans are pretty much bolt in and reconnect the wires or is everyone running new wires and what not? _________________ [This Space For Rent] |

My fan just came with 2 bare wires sticking out. I got an generic electrical connector at a parts store and used that to make a connection with the factory wires. _________________ 1987 951 - M193 Version for Japan |

isn't low amperage, but its a 16 inch fan from the junkyard that flows reportedly over 4500cfm (noone has real flow numbers)

So you guys are mounting 16" fans to a 12" radiator core? Interesting.

Yep Todd, lower edge of the fan is even with the rad, upper part is higher. Maybe it's for good: drawing additional air thru 951 IC I have under badge panel
I'm going to fabricate custom aluminium rad anyway that is 16 inches high for a 2.5 16v engine. _________________ '83 924 2.6 16v Turbo, 470hp

Huh, can't think of any reason it wouldn't work and work well as you would be covering more of the width too. I just installed a 951 rad wich is 14" high so I went with a cheap $50 14" fan and it works great! First 90° day today and it ran cool as a cucumber in traffic and on the road. I actually had more trouble before with cooling at speed than in town. I think it was because the intercooler would heat soak during extended criuse. I have since installed a second blow-off to try to bleed some of this heat.

Oil temp? What's that?!!
Actually, I think it's getting pretty warm because I have around 5bar cold at idle but only about 1bar hot. I run 20w50wt Synthetic. An oil cooler is on the "list".

I tell you what though now I have the blower without a clutch I can feel the heat coming out of the intercooler tubing... I might seriously in the future think about one of those tube style water to air coolers and use that to replace the tubing between the blower and intercooler.
