OK I'm sorry for bothering you people with a non-Porsche question but my friend is having a problem with his 1992 Honda Accord I-4 16 Valve Car. He seriously wants to go to this college called Mercer University and he can go there for free since his dad is a security guard there and if his car don't work then he will have to relocate to Florida to live with his grandparents so I'm trying to get his car running up to speed so he can stay here....
OK enough with the whole 1st part of the sad story....
Well 2 days ago his car stopped running, when you tried to start it, it sounded like it wanted to start it but it did not, well we thought it had jumped timing or what not....
well we took it to a mechanic and he said he changed the spark plugs because they were fuel fouled and it cost like $160 to do all that so it ran for like 4 hours.... He went to work and when he tried to start it, it did the same thing.
We pulled the plugs and to our surprise it was fuel fouled all we did was wipe them off and it started back up
so my question is what would be wrong for it to foul the plugs...
if all you u know is Porsche then what ever help/advice you can give will work considering i own a Porsche so i could probably translate into Honda...
thank you so very much in advance for your advice.

If I remember correctly, the Honda have electrcially fired fuel injectors, so the problem should not be a defective fuel distributors like we have on the 924 and 931.
First thing I would do is make sure that the liquid on the spark plugs is fuel and not coolant from a blown headgasket.
The liquid is either coolant from a blown headgasket that leaks down into the cylinder/s after shutdown, or fuel from one or more defective/leaking fuel injectors.
Remove one of the wet sparkplugs, and put a match to the liquid. If it burns, it's fuel, and if it sizzles and bubbles, then it's coolant.
A coolant leak means the engine needs a headgasket at the very least. If one or more of the fuel injectors are bad, buy all new ones. Don't try to cheap out by buying only one and trying to find the defective one/s, or waste money by having them cleaned. |

| Many Handas have a weak outrigger bearing in the distributor below the rotor which, if it fails, causes the shaft to wobble about hitting and damaging the magnetic triggers inside (there are about 4 of them). If it's this, they are very difficult to fix but you might find a pattern one cheaper or get lucky in a salvage yard. |

Lets start with the basics.
1) Check for spark. Like rusto said, the hondas have pretty common problems inside the distributor, if there is no spark I'd go straight to replacing it. You should be able to pick one up from a junkyard for $150 or so, or a new one from a parts house for ~$400.
2) Check for fuel. Really just crack the fitting on the left side of the fuel line. If some sprays out you can eliminate that, if some doesn't you need to look at the *GASP* Fuel pump relay (I'm sure you guys can relate to that!) It's a white box under the dash on the drivers side, approximately straight up from where your left foot rests.
Post your findings and I'll do my best to help! |
