|
|
Hey guys!! I've been a long time reader, but this is my first post.
I've been pondering a remote mount turbo setup for a while. I'd keep the fuel distributor where it is in the bay but would run the pipes from that to the turbo in the back and then of course the pressure pipe to the engine. would doing this affect throttle response? For example would there be a bad lag from when the throttle was pressed to when the engine responded (not turbo lag)? I you look at it, it's around 20 ft of pipe between the fuel distributor and the throttle body. Is this going to be too much of a strain on the CIS system?
I have also considered putting the turbo in the engine bay sort-of like a 944 turbo and running a cross over pipe from the header but I'm concerned about heat on the bottom of the fuel distributor (since it is plastic).
Any input is greatly appreciated and I know from previous posts I'm likely to get opposition.
Thanks

hi
I posted a similar question a little while ago, you can check a company called sts turbo systems - they claimed it can be done although most of their research was with larger and newer motors. their idea seems to make sense but I have my doubts with our stock system. There are many other people that know much more about this than me, I'm still learning.

I have seen a great deal of STS and they are partly why I am considering doing a remote mount. What I have seen with them, the cars they do are all electronic fuel injection. Sometimes they place the MAF in the back on the turbos inlet or they leave it where it is on the intake manifold and hook it up to the compressor outlet of the turbo.
Our CIS system is an air flow meter, it cannot sense pressure (at least not that I know of). Please correct me if I'm wrong. I have messed with Megasquirt before but don't want to on this setup. _________________ 1977 Porsche 924 - going away...

I would imagine that it would have some affect on the throttle responce, your guess though is as good as the next guys. _________________ 3 928s, |

I'd consider the install a lot more if the lag wasn't enough to kill the engine every time I hit the throttle. I'm still researching other options before I make a final decision. I've got space in the engine bay where the A/C compressor was to place a turbo but the fuel dist is less than 4 inches from the turbine housing. The radiator overflow and the radiator cooling fans are about the same distance away. _________________ 1977 Porsche 924 - going away...

Sounds like a piping nightmare
What about the oil piping and the oil return, thats going to be fun ?
If your turbo is a watercooled unit like many of the modern ones are, then even more fun
I think that rear mounting is something you would go for, when you need a bit of extra power, without striping your motor down and lowering the CR.
Unless youv'e installed a turbo on a NA vehicle before, then I would advise to stick it in the engine bay, thats where you will be able to get plenty of help from others on forums.
So many unknowns will involve a lot of trial and error, so my guess is that by the time you got a reliable system, it would have taken less time an money if you had just stuck it in the engine bay. |

I have built a vw aircooled engine and turbocharged it with megasquirt but I considered it a nightmare because I don't have access to a dyno. All I could do was datalog and look for spikes in the O2 sensor and judge that everything was right by the "seat of your pants" sensor.
I am going to end up putting the turbo in the bay where the A/C comp was. I'll have to reclock the turbo so the oil flows straight down. Then I will get a turbo blanket such as this:

I don't want any problems with melting plastic, or even worse melting wires in the engine bay. _________________ 1977 Porsche 924 - going away...

What turbo are you going to use ?
Are you going to lower the CR ? |

I have got a turbo from a 04 Subaru WRX. It is a TD04L series. It seems perfect for what I plan to do. The exhaust enters directly from the bottom from the turbo and the compressors outlet exits directly from the side.
As far as CR goes, I'm going to keep it stock right now. I'm slowly accumulating parts to rebuild the engine late this coming summer. I'm only going to run approx. 5 psi. Once I rebuild the engine, I'll keep the CR around 8.5 to 9. _________________ 1977 Porsche 924 - going away...
