|
|
I just tried to install a new cd player and Im having alot of trouble with my wiring. Its all wired up correctly, but it stopped working as I put the cd player in. Im pretty sure I've narrowed it down to the wire that powers the clock. I need to tap into that one so that my cd player can keep time, and it will not operate with out it. So anyway, the wire to the clock is definately not getting any power.
Anyone have some advice? I was thinking maybe running a new wire from the fuse box or something but if there is an easier way, i'd love to hear it.
Thanks,

I would run a wire to the fuse box that always has power in order to keep the time. You also might steal that kind of power off your cars clock if it has one. _________________ 1976 924

The radio on mine shares the same power with the cig lighter for the switched 12v.
Constant 12v req for memory and clock functions can be taken from the cars clock. _________________ Porsche 924 1984 (UK import) NA

Right, I know that you have to use the clocks power, but that is the problem. The wires which run to the clock do not get any power now for some reason. As soon as I was ready to install the cd player we tested it, and it worked fine. But when we tried to get it into the console, it quit working.
So my question is, is there a fuse that could have broken that would cause the clock to lose power? And if not, how could I fix the problem?
And how exactly would I run a wire from the fuse box?
Thanks,

You probably blew the fuse.
Did you check the current draw of the audio unit BEFORE you tried connecting it?
1980 and later cars were wired from the factory for a sound system, and carry a seperate dedicated circuit with a relay specifically for a sound system. I have never seen a car with a Dealer installed radio that actually uses the radio relay circuit since most Dealer Audio Installers are hacks.
If you have an earlier model, you don't have a prewired radio circuit with relay, so I recommend that you go straight to the fuse block and plug your power inputs into free terminals on the back of the fuse panel. There are available circuits that are powered all the time, and circuits that are powered when the key is turned. Look at a circuit diagram for your model year to determine the circuit numbers for the powered all the time and powered when the ignition is on circuits. |

There are 7 "H" spade pins on back of the fuse-relay board. They're 12V+ all the time and unfused - so preferably attach there only if the memory wire has a fuse in-line.
See here -

and in the Haynes on pg. 237. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."

Thanks guys
I will have a look today at it. Wiring really isn't my strong suit, so I hope all goes well.

Fuse #7 powers the clock, so if getting nothing that's your likely culprit...

You guys were right. I blew a fuse. So it blows one every time. Anyway, I guess I will see about wiring up a new path for the constant for the cd player.
