On the way to work today I noticed that my gear stick had way more slack than yesterday... like heaps... I think something has let go... and I just got it back on the road...

Investigate the gearbox linkage. Depends on the box, I assume it's an Audi box. It's all levers and bushes that wear then eventually break. There has been a few threads on broken shift gubbins recently, do a search!

It's an Audi box, yup...

Gotta get home from work first... then I'll start searching...

Start at the shift lever - if it is an Audi, there'll be an E-clip holding the rod to the lever. If that's the problem, with the boot left off you can hold the rod onto the lever and shift at the same time to get you home.

Doesn't seem to be anything wrong with the lever. I disconnected it and the shift rod back to gearbox has all the slack in it. Fun fun fun.

I was heading overseas for work, so I dropped the car into my local friendly mech (who knows alot about our cars thankfully). He called me when I was in India last week to say the damage would be the tidy sum of $77!!

Loose bolts on the linkage - re-torqued, loctite - job done. Best $77 I've spent to be honest - gearbox feels brand-new!

So I'm on the road again... until I get the CGT kit from Alan...!
