Hi all,

I just purchased a '78 Porsche 924 (not bad for a first car) for $1300cnd with dreams of making it a beauty. The exterior is perfect but the interior is a different story. The reason I picked bought this car is because the seller had himself convinced that the clutch was blown because the car is stuck in first gear. I asked a couple mechanics and they both instanly thought the problem was the linkage. I cracked the console open and the linkage is the problem. That shouldn't be too big of a deal but what will is the heater.

I am assuming that the heater core should be located in the passenger footwell. When I look up there, there is absolutely nothing except for a couple of metal hoses that look like they should be hooked up to the heater.

If anyone can tell me how the heating system works in this car and if it is indeed meant to be in the passenger footwell it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I would recommend trying to contact Min he is in vernon and could answer these questions very easily.

what is the problem with the heater, if it is the motor which isnt working then you may need to pull the heater box out.

Here a photo which shows the unconnected metal hoses.

Are they meant to be hooked up to the heating system?

Nope.

Honestly, those look like fuel hoses, but what are they doing there?

Ah, those look like AC lines from the dealer installed AC on early cars. 'tis the AC under the glovebox that you're missing.

The lines to/from the heater core are two rubber hoses that go directly through the firewall. The heater core is sort of behind the radio and up toward the windshield. The coolant lines from the engine to the core will be on the passenger side of the core. It isn't easy to see or get to by any means.

The heating system is very simple - hot coolant comes out of the rear of the head then into the a small radiator (heater core) under the dash. Fresh air blows onto the small, hot, core giving you heat. The slightly cooler coolant travels back through the firewall and on toward the water pump. There is a valve on the return side of the coolant which will either be shut to block coolant flow, giving cool air, or it's open letting hot coolant heat up the heater core to give hot air.

ps - read through the Haynes manual a few times, even if you don't understand it all you'll get familiar with the parts. Good luck!
