so... i'm wondering if you guys can offer and wisdom for me on a strange issue i've been having.

to put it simply... i seem to get these instantaneous blips of 0% engine power... feels exactly like when the overboost cutoff switch... cuts-off. anyway, my overboost switch has actually been taken out of the loop because it needs to be replaced. i've got a new one on order right now.. so i'll have it in fairly soon. in the meantime, i've got the lead that goes to it grounded to keep the circuit closed for obvious reasons. now.. these instances seem to occur only when i go over hard bumps in the road. however, it doesn't happen all the time. for a while, i was trying to figure out what seems to be the only difference between the days it happens and the days when it doesn't. turns out.. it's rain... and/or high humidity. i don't know what that means. i keep thinking that the grounded wire may be loose or something.. but the fact that it only occurs when water is in the ambient air would seem to indicate something else. i dunno. i'm rather stumped. perhaps i'm missing something. any ideas from the peanut gallery would be highly appreciated.

...oh, and for the record, i've got a boost gauge and i'm keeping my eye on it. no crazy vacuum leaks, and no crazy overboosting or anything. everything is lookin' normal on the gauge. and i'm watchin' it like a hawk cause since that switch is disabled for the time being. just didn't want you guys worryin' your pretty little heads about me

ok, so... i feel lame now. the rain/ambient moisture was just a coincidence. the thing was just getting worse over the previous few days. turns out it was the fuel pump relay. i went ahead and pulled it out, tapped on it a bit, heard a metallic "ring" when i tapped from one direction... so i popped it open, poke at the spring a little, and decided that it was worn out. i went and dug through my box of spare WV and Audi relays until i found a spring that looked like the one in my fuel pump relay... went ahead and swapped them... and the problem has completely gone away.

sooo.. yeah. i'm glad i found it and managed to fix it. but i feel lame for not having already replaced that relay. and i do have a brand new one on order that i'll keep in my glovebox. so that's good.

in the meantime, feel free to poke and prod and jeer for overlooking an obvious culprit.

We've all been there!

I remember when Paul was over in Oz and we went for run into the coast hinterland... my car quit on the way back, after having new fuel pumps and new fuel pump relay installed. It bucked and backfired and then quit. I swore up a storm thinking one of my new bits had died on me, thinking I'm gonna have to fork out big bucks again to get it fixed. So anyway, Paul calmly does a few checks, finds nothing drastically wrong, then opens up the dizzy... the rotor had lunched itself on the cap! Quick bend with the pliers and she's good to go again. Replaced the rotor/cap and never had a problem since...

Nigel,

That gets me thinkin...I sometimes have a problem like that with my NA. It happens when the engine isnt warmed up, it stutters sometimes, I wonder if maybe the fuel pump has a short. Probably unlikely, but I think ill try it
