My tranny has been grinding for a while and has gotten worse. I know it isn't the wheel bearings or cv's. I think it could be the tapered roller bearing (p/n: 999 059 027 00) on the joint flanges. What are the chances that these bearings are bad vs the ring gear and pinion shaft bein bad? I am thinking of replacing these two bearings. How difficult is that to do? Is there anything that I should be doing/changing while I am in there?

TIA,

Do you mean that something is grinding while the car idles in neutral?

Sometimes there is some grinding in neutral or straight, but mainly during left turns, moreso on hard left turns.

But only when the car is rolling? If so, bad wheel bearings.

Rasta Monsta: I have replaced wheel bearings in the rear so it shouldn't be those.

augidog: I saw your post which made me think of my tranny issues. I figure with winter coming up, I could have the car out of service for a while while I figure this out.
