Hi guys I'm new a newbie to both this forum and 924's.
I have just bought a 924 and drove it home it was going fine...then as i tried to accelarate there was very little power, i pulled over and shut the engine of. Then when i tried to start her up again there was nothing, after a jump start it started again but overheated although it cooled down when i was moving again.
The following day i tried to start her up and it turned over fine but the revs just died down, and it cut out. This happened 5 or 6 times then after giving it some gas for a while it seemed ok. Although the temp seemed to raise when i wasnt driving.
There is a similar post titled "Stupid Altenator" could it be that i have the same problem? ie not enough power getting to the fuel pump and fan. But this doesnt seem to explain why could turn the engine over the next day without it dying.
Anyway sorry for such a long post, if anyone ould help i would really apreciate it.
Despite all this i still love the car and will do what it takes to get back on the road. |

Sounds like a fuel pressure problem. Try the filter first, and if that doesn't work you should have the pressure tested.

Jim: Where are you located? Do you have a Haynes manual yet? What you're describing could, unfortunately, be a few different things and you have to systematically go through the car to pinpoint the problem. Something as simple as bad grounds can cause poor running condition and hard starting. The fuel systems are extremely sensitive to old fuel and the fuel tank will rust if left empty for a while, leading to corrosion getting into the fuel system, ruining the pump(s).
Do you have any other history on the car? How long has it been sitting, if it has been sitting, etc.
Welcome to the board. A little more info and you'll have some of our top people working on this for you. _________________ '80 924 n/a SOLD |

In addition to the above, a no-starter condition with warm/hot engine is a good sign that the starter solenoid is gunked up. -But with starters, there can be a combination of partial problems that only add up to a no-start when they're combined. Those are oxidised connections (at the starter, alternator and battery - and grounds to all 3 (wires for the alternator and battery, mounting bolts for the starter (wire brush the bolts and chase the threads with a tap if you can)). -There's also weak battery and bad solenoid as was mentioned. The ignition switch can sometimes play a role too, but since it started with a boost, probably not in your case.
Check your alternator/water-pump belt - make sure it's there and not slipping. That could account for all three - weak battery, poor running (not enough juice to power the ignition), and overheating due to the waterpump not being driven. Also make sure your radiator fan/s are coming on.
The poor running can also be due to a need for a tune-up - plug wires, dist cap, rotor, plugs, air filter, etc. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."

Thanks for the help guys:
D Hook: I'm located in London, England. I have a Haynes Manual on its way from ebay. The car has apparently been sitting for a year or two so this could be a cause, I assume this would involve replacing the fuel pump?
Smoothie:I forgot to mention the altenator/waterpump belt was kicking of a little smoke and a rubber smell, and the previous owner said he replaced the last one because it had shredded.
Ummm the more i write the less good this looks.
Thanks again guys, i welcome anymore suggestions/advice. |

| Just tried starting her up again and it turned over fine, but the revs died down again. Even when i gave it full gas the the revs were very low and cut out. |

Is the alternator properly aligned with the other pulleys. . .I seem to recall a spacer in there that needs to be installed in the correct place. . . _________________ Toofah King Bad

If you can tolerate the long download time, this one is well worth looking at. _________________ '80 924 Turbo |
