I have a clicking from the engine. It is in the front and sounds like from cam pulley. I have checked and adjusted (if needed) the valves while hot to make sure they are set correctly...and they are. Would they still have some valve slapping? Could it be something else? I have noticed that the edge of the timing belt is hanging off the cam pulley by about 1-2 mm. I don't know if that would be a problem or not. _________________ Rob

I found that the tensioner pulley will tighten the belt if you rotate it in either direction.
However in one direction it scrapes against the motor after tightening it up.
So I obviously tighten it the other way.
This might just be my motor or is this normal.
Could be your problem? _________________ Porsche 924 1984 (UK import) NA

There will always be some noise from solid lifters.
The timing belt hanging off is not right but should not cause a problem (might have to space the pulley out a bit), the noise could be the ALT or PS belt (if its up front) check these well as the pulley side of the belt could get a "flap" of belt going and then stop on a pulley were you cant see it. Also you can take the other belts off to narrow it down. _________________ Rick

Have you cleaned out your oil tube over the cam?
On all the 924's I ever owned the drivebelt always hung out about a millimeter or so over the edge. The one I have now used to tick at start up and higher RPM. You could try switching oil weights. When I moved to the cold, bleak, dark, depressing, cold, rainy, (and did I mention cold?) state of Washington, I had to switch from 20w50 to 10w40. That ended the ticking for me.
Summer please come six months early. _________________ Shut up fool, those are mine. |

IIRC the tensioner should be rotated clockwise to tension the belt. We've found that the belt walks to the outside (front) of the cam pulley when the tensioner is failing.
