I was just wondering how many Automatic trans were still out there.
I have a 79 with an auto and dont recall ever seeing another one (not around these parts anyway )

My wife drives a 77.5 auto. Very early, very rare. One of the friendliest cars I've ever known.

Are you guys happy with your automatics? I'm looking around for another early 924 to convert to a Carrera gt replica and have been toying with the idea of an automatic (if I can find one).

I've driven an '87 924s and a couple 944s with an automatic but never an early car.

I've heard that they are painfully slow but speed isn't a big issue with me. Do you find them sufficient enough to at least keep up with stop and go traffic?

Any unusual maintenance issue that you (or anyone else) can share about the autos would be great.

Hopefully this isn't too off topic, if so I'll start another thread.

Slow yes- for racing off from the lights.
Maintenance- only changed the oil once.
Adjusted the kickdown cable once.
Trouble free otherwise.

Why is that funny oh master of the 924?

If you're asking why I would convert an automatic 924 into a carrera gt replica well that's pretty simple really. I like the looks of the carrera gt and I'm thinking about getting an auto for a daily driver. The area I live in has bad traffic at times and driving a manual can get old. Not to mention the fact that I have another 924 and other cars (a 5-speed and a 6-speed btw) when I want that.

I didn't say I wanted a car that was as fast as a carrera gt.

Is that ok? Let me know because I'll base my decision on that.

Thanks for the helpful reply.

That's good to hear. Slow doesn't bother me much. I'm old enough to not feel the need to prove myself to every Honda that pulls up next to me.

As my left knee is completely fubar from some idiot driver having a head on with me in the car at 100kph I prefer an auto nowadays.

My first Toofah was a 2.0L auto. Not real impressive off the line, but not THAT bad! Great at highway speeds; 3rd (top) gear was right there, no need for kickdown to pass, just buzzed right along. I find the same experience with the 924S auto I have now, except that of course it's much nicer off the line.

The auto creates interesting maintenance/longevity perspective. The 2.0L I had looked excellent inside, had excellent oil pressure and bore wear after some 160kmi. I figured that the nature of the trans kept any unruly owners from beating too hard on it, not to mention such drivers tended to not prefer to drive an auto!

OTOH, the 924S I just put rod bearings in (157kmi). Bores also look great, but then they don't tend to wear out in those silicon blocks! However, the bearings were really worn out, and I'm glad I caught them in time. One was into the brass! I believe it's because of the higher revs at speed (4000rpm at 75mph or so). The 2.0L was driven back east where the speed limits are lower; here in Detroit, 80mph is no problem, limit is usually 70 and regularly ignored.

I'm happy with mine, never did a thing to it in almost ten years. I do think its alot slower but its the corners a live for

Good deal. That helps a lot.

I live for the corners too. Never cared much for drag racing personally.

One more question for everyone. Is the automatic in the 's' the same as the early cars? I drove an '87 a few days ago with an automatic and thought that one felt great. Smooth shifting even though the car was fairly rough.

Sorry for all the questions. For the past 20 years I've always had a 924 but I never paid a lot of attention to the automatics. I must be getting old. lol
