Hey guys, I chose to ask this question here because you all have been really thourough in asnwering all of my questions.
I have a 1999 Subaru Forester S.
I have a little problem with my car right now. While the car is cold (hasnt run for several hours) it stutters in 1st gear. While I let off of the clutch it doesnt seem to want to catch. Once the car is warmed up the problem goes away.
About 10 months ago, I was having a similar problem but the check engine light came on. After running the diagnostics, it turned out to be the knock sensor. It was an easy replacement. And the problem went away for a while.
Now the problem has seemed to come back, but no check engine light. I was wondering if there is something else I should check. Thanks _________________ 1982 Porsche 924 Targa |

If it was a 924, I'd say it was the WUR. I don't know what sort of low temp enrichment method the Japs use on the Subaru, but you could look at that...? _________________ 1985 Porsche 924 'Lux', Kalahari Beige (my ex)

Perhaps a different sensor is out, like a coolant or air temp sensor? Sorry I can't be of more help; my wife has a WRX, but I haven't done anything to it besides change the oil! _________________ Vaughan Scott

I have a 2002 Subaru Impreza Outback and a couple weeks ago my Check Engine light went on. Like your previous situation, I needed a knock sensor - again very easy to replace. The next morning I went for emission with no check engine light on. AS I pulled up it came back on and I immediately felt the same hesitation I (and you) expereienced before.
This time the OBD returned these codes - P1512, P1514, P1516, and P1518 which are the four Idle Air Control Solenoids (low input for these code). This is the trickle down effect from the bad knock sensor. Since I just replaced mine, I just cleaned the connectors. I also decided to do a tune up (plugs and fuel filter). I do not have any of the problems now.
So, I'd check your knock sensor and air control solenoid connectors. If you havent changed the plugs and fuel filter ina while, that couldn't hurt either.
Sorry for all the extra history, buth I thought it might be helpful. _________________ 924.org (no time to complete)
