Does anyone know the reason for that large aluminum piece hanging on the back of my 77's 4speed trans? I do not see any other reason for it other than that it blocks the bolts I would need to remove if I had to pull the endcap off (not that I am planning on the soon).
It looks like that if I took that piece off I would have enough room to do a clutch job (my car has 100,000 + miles on it) without too much trouble.
I figure it must be there for a reason but for the life of me I cannot think of one.

Transfers impact energy through the drivetrain if hit from behind, leaving you more intact Also keeps a large impact from plowing in and rupturing the fuel tank. It doesn't weight much and there's no reason to leave it off.

With a 4-speed trans, I believe you can pull the clutch without removing the transaxle. If you remove the alloy piece, you should have space to slide the torque tube + trans back far enough to get at the clutch. Marginally easier than pulling the trans off completely. Still a pain.

Thanks for the info. I'll just keep it on until I need to replace my clutch.
But that all hinges on me getting a new fuel pump (it's on backorder through Performance Parts).

That is good info nick. I have my son's tranny about 75% re-installed, I had to pull it to install a rollpin in the 3-4 shift fork, and will definately put it back in.
