|
|
morning folks,
how much roughly am i looking at paying to have a private mechanic carry out a cambelt and tensioner change on my 81 auto n/a?
and does anyone know a reputable 924 mechanic in the UK/london/surrey area?
...oh and is there a way to tell by looking if mine needs doing as i haven't had the car a very long time....and would prefer to know... rather than trust the PO
thanks

Parts are about 70-80 dollars and shouldn't take an hour to fit (actually less but probably have a minimum 1 hour fee)
Check with this mob for suggestions for good mechanics in your area.

The parts are sure more expensive over there.
Here in the U.S., we can get a German made Continental Belt, and a German made pulley for about $30. |

Sorry - quoting Au prices, probably cheaper in UK as well. _________________ Porsche 924 1984 (UK import) NA

On eurocarparts the belt is £3.68 and the tensioner is £60.12 (both plus vat). Pick up a haynes manual, they're a doddle to change on the n/a model. _________________ Mars Red '78 Euro 924 n/a

That seem pretty high for the tensioner. That's what....$110US? I think I paid $35US last time I bought one.
You may want to shop around a little. _________________ '80 924 n/a SOLD |

The site has restrictions unless you are a full member.
Go to a section you can access eg Pint and a curry and ask if anyone can help. _________________ Porsche 924 1984 (UK import) NA

Are you sure you got the right part for the tensioner there, 5150? I paid about £18 for a NA tensioner (can't remember if that was with VAT or without). _________________ 1985 Porsche 924 'Lux', Kalahari Beige (my ex)

there was some confusion over the tensioners when I bought mine - one of the parts companies (can't remember if it was euro or GSF) had stopped doing the VW (i.e. cheap) replacement and was only quoting the £60 one.
I managed to go to the other place and get one for between 10 to 20 pounds...
I have about 4 old ones at my brothers so if you're really struggling!
otherwise its not that difficult a job, perhaps you should have a go at it. On the N/A you can't go far wrong and its not a disaster if you do...

Sean, the ones you've got do they have a 24mm adjustment nut or a couple of little holes to put some silly tool in? I bought a new tensioner yonks ago and it's got these little holes in it, sort of like circlip plier sized holes. Not sure if that makes any sense the way I've described it! _________________ 1978 924na |

Thanks for your good advice everyone...!
I thought it was a big nasty job. Clearly not.
And it is funny....after doing all the other work on this car....It's amazing at how simple it is to work on.
Thanks very much for your kind offer Seanski, I will try to hunt the VW tensioner from gsf or eurocarparts ; ] and if no joy...i'll holla
Regards,

yeah, I know what you mean - the old ones had a concatenated nut (i/e an offset nut which you used to tension it while tightening the bolt) and the newer ones have the holes for the tensioner tool. They don't make the concatenated nut style any more. it doesn't matter though because you don't need the special tool to tension the one with the holes, you can make your own tool, or use needlenosed pliers or a couple of nails and a screwdriver or any of a number of ways!
Actually one guy I spoke to talked about switching to a setup where there's a stud in the thermostat housing which you can then use with a nut to tighten the tensioner - save all those alloy thermostat housings people go through when overtightening the tensioner or using a knackered bolt...
so, er back on topic, yes I have an old one with a nut but its probably in a sorry state! _________________ 1998 BMW Z3 2.8 arctic silver & red

you're welcome!
BTW, just thought... One way you can mess up is how I mentioned in the other post to Jaf. Again, not life threatening, but as I made the mistake myself I can explain it! - the tensioner is bolted to the thermostat housing. The problem is that the thermo housing is alloy. When you tighten up the tensioner you have to torque the bolt quite tight. You can easily thread it. Again, not life threatening, but you'd probably need to source a replacement thermo housing (ebay/breakers yard etc).
to avoid this I'd suggest that you buy a new bolt as well (I'm pretty sure it doesn't come with the tensioner hence me making the mistake reusing a knackered bolt)
Or, if you are unlucky enough to kill the thermostat housing I'd imagine a machine shop would put a stud in it for you that you could use instead of the bolt - the bolt is a pretty stupid fixing for the tensioner anyway...
Hope that hasn't scared you off, its a fairly straightforward job otherwise! _________________ 1998 BMW Z3 2.8 arctic silver & red

Cheers Sean, one of those jobs I've never gotten round to. Dimly remember the bolt was too long for the new tensioner and couldn't find another one in my box of bits. Must get on with that job!
Tiny, trust me if I can change the belt and tensioner (and then put the old one back on!) anyone can do it. You'll be fine.
By the way, either of you phoned GSF lately? I use them for pretty much everything and the last time I phoned them up they tried to make me go through to the Head Office as Porsche customers have to call there. Huh?! Fortunately I persisted and got through to my normal guy, some stupid memo has gone to all the branches apparantly. _________________ 1978 924na |
