Well, the other day the turbo install was finished. The car started immediately, but something didn't sound right. There was a lot of noise coming from the turbo and quite a bit of dark exhaust coming out the back.

I'm pretty much assuming this means I need to rebuild the turbo? I was told that wouldn't be necessary. I'm going to contact my924gtc, but I doubt from what I've heard lately that it'll do much good.

On a side note, my dad work in the industrial supplies business, and I was wondering if I could get the parts to rebuild cheaper through him? There wasn't any shaft play or bent fins when I put the turbo in, so I figured the parts needing rebuilding are seals and bearings?

Not trying to be a sob story or pity case, I just had a few questions.

Dark smoke usually means you are running rich. Does it smell like gasoline?

The smoke would be bluish white and smell like oil if the turbo seals were bad.

Describe the noise that the turbo is making.

if it happens that your turbo needs to be rebuilt, don't make the mistake I did and try doing the rebuild yourself. There are quite a number of tolerances that, if not within spec, will make your rebuild completely redundant. I recommend that you remove the turbo yourself and take it to a turbo shop if you believe it to be the problem.
Smoking problems can also be caused by the crankcase breather being plugged. Try cleaning it with carb cleaner or old gasoline prior to an oil change and see if that stops your smoking problem.

But make sure it's oil smoke first, as Paul has already mentioned.

The noise was something else, pretty much unrelated, and its taken care of. Well, the smoke was oil, and the seals on the turbo are bad. It was putting oil into the hotside and inbetween the cold side and center section, but no oil was in the actual cold side or intake.

The impeller and fins are all straight with no shaft play though, so I think I'll only need the seals and maybe the bearings as long as we're in there?

My dad is pretty confidant about being able to rebuild it himself, hes been working with industrial seals and such on all different applications for over 30 years. He was the one who made up the oil lines for me.

Beauler? Beauler?

Anyways, yeah, I sent him a message. We'll see. What'd be cheaper, do you think, a rebuild on this old rayjay unit, or a new turbo to fit the BAE flange?

If you find where to get the seals etc could you let me know please? The Rayjay seems to be a very good turbo for it's age, but if you do change you might be able to get something with a built in waste gate, as your sydtem doesn't have one from memory.
