just inspected a 1981 924, Auto

It was in good condition considering it's age.

Drove nice, but probably need shocks, not that fast felt a bit like the trans was slipping probably how these three speeders feel though.

the interior was worn/faded but complete,

the exhaust had a small hole so it sounded a bit like a tractor.

the engine idled a bit rough and I could hear the tappets, (I guess these and the aging k-jet tronic are my biggest worries)

AC worked, elec windows worked, started first time, some panel damage around the lower edges but no rust, paint excellent.

The owner says it has done 65,000 klms probably 265,000

any opinions would be great thanks

here's a link to the ad (with bad pics)

Auto... ugh. A/C... ugh.

You'll have more fun if you can find a similarly priced 5-speed. I paid about that for my 81 924 5-speed, so it's in the ball-park. Would depend on the cost to fix the items you mention...

Gavin.

A reasonable price in Oz for a roadworthy vehicle.

The auto is bog slow and dont get going until it hits 4k rpm.
Manual and turbo are quicker but for cruising all are fine.

A/c too and working.

Probably worth the money.

OK, thanks... I get the feel,

thanks!

I will think I will make a silly offer,

The wife will be the other drive, so AC and AUTO are manditory...mmmm

Any technical advice about the rough idle and the tapety sound?

If you do a search here you will find a big list of things to go over after purchasing, esp for peace of mind and safety.

Oh yeah,

and what does a "tune up" require,

Seems like the group could make the car worth it!

I get most of mine from the US or UK as most Oz guys are related to Ned Kelly.
Just post on here and someone will help.

Timing belt and tensioner, spark plugs and leads, rotor and timing light.
A service with oil and filter, trans oil and diff oil, brake fluid replacement and check of calipers and drums.
Fuel filter and air filter.
If the previous owner has recent recipts fine but dont accept word of mouth.

i had an auto for my first 924. even though a 5 spd is obviously better, the fun factor was still huge and i have fond memories of the roadtrips i had in it.

it was a '78 with 120### kms on it, i sold it at 150### kms.

the only auto-related problem i had was in 4 yrs i had to change the rubber dampener on the front of the torque tube twice. its the auto equiv of doing a clutch job.
2nd hand ones are all old and i reckon to be shelf life expired so i think its only a matter of time before your one will go and you'll have to get another.

The Porsche Centre? Or the Porsche Club of Victoria?

aPorschaPart and Performance 9 are in Victoria.

Swan Porsche Parts is in Western Australia.

There are others I can't remember...

By the way, I agree with Ozzie... if the car runs and it's straight and clean then AU$3,500 is probably a pretty good price.

OK, so this thing might be a go!

here is a list of part and prices that I think I will need to this project happening

Parts cost gestimate to get the 924 up to scratch
2 x hatch back struts $80 each $160
4 x shock/struts $1000
4 x brakes $200
exhaust repair/patch $200
accelerator cable $150
Fluids $100
plugs $30

If any one has any corrections, particularly if they are downward, I'd love to hear from you!

Paul
