What type of exhaust setup sounds nice and loud on these cars? as of now I have some kind of muffler I dunno what kind and I noticed someone took out the cat and just welded a straight peice of pipe in its place, Cant really tell the sound of it atm because its not fully bolted on to the headers but would that make much difference? Its quiet atm. The louder the better just not straight headers, gotta have it legal _________________ 1977 924 - sold

What kinda sound do cherry bombs produce? I've only heard flowmaster. Hopefully not ricer-ish? _________________ 1977 924 - sold

Lmao, So would 2 cherry bombs cause loss in power or anything like that? Also where on the pipe would be best to install the 2? One at cat location and one at the end? _________________ 1977 924 - sold

In the last 24 years I have tried most of the different exhausts.
I have used
Best Stahl headers and no cat with straight throug muffler, nice sound
Cut the downpipe and made duals with Cherry bombs, too loud for me at my age but nice according to my friends, no cat
stock exhaust manifold with 944 setup quiet but not good enough.
Check out a no cat with a Warlock muffler. You can open the left side exhaust pipe on the muffler for straight through or block it with supplied plate and the exhaust comes out the right side normally. Might be a little loud.
Stock muffler with cat the quietest.
Currently looking to put on the dual pipes again with a two in two out muffler. I have not looked for one to fit though. _________________ "Never let them see you sweat"

I am saying to put them in series not in parellel,
yes 1 where the cat was/is, and 2 were the muffler normally is, will it cause a power loss doubtful _________________ 3 928s, |

Cool because 2 cherry bombs would be less then a flowmaster _________________ 1977 924 - sold

I'm running an MSDS header with 2.5" exhaust throughout; 3 Dynomax bullet race mufflers to calm it down (not much!) with a turn-down at the end.
Note that my turn-down is not one of the off-the-shelf aluminized ones, but rather a mandrel-bent one. The off-the-shelf crimped style take a lot more noise out of the exhaust, mine only redirects the noise (away from the sound meter).
I would NOT recommend this on a street car: it's evil, horrendously loud, and will guarantee a BAD headache for the driver (I have to use earplugs inside my helmet) and many tickets. Still sounds much deeper and throatier than the rice rockets - way more refined and serious.
However, we did throw a Thrush Turbo muffler on the end of it once for a DE (in place of the last bullet muffler, same location as stock rear muffler). This really quieted it down nicely, quite suitable for the street, yet still sounded great. Sometime I'd love to dyno the difference; if it's not an HP loss, I'd rather race with it (remember the earplugs?).
I am VERY fond of the Dynomax race bullet mufflers; they're only like $35 from Racer Parts Wholesale, are straight-through, very compact, and are much more durable than a cherry bomb. Mine have taken much abuse, still fine. _________________ Vaughan Scott

I have a full flowmaster on mine. I like it, but sometimes it is a bit loud. It sounds sort of like what you would expect from a pickup truck when you drive economically, but when you put your foot in it, it really opens up.
Honestly, I think I would get a flowmaster or something similar if you want a good exhaust note. It's not really ricey at all, a good deep noise, not high pitched at all. On deceleration in gear, from a high rpm, you can hear the burble of gas going into the exhaust, sounds pretty good, like a rally car or something.
Downshifting under a tunnel is fun too! Good way to scare your friends when the roof is out. Makes a huge noise!
Ryan
ps- I will be more proud of my car when it is painted tho, I look like a redneck right now with a loud exhaust, and a crappy bondo job on the side. haha. _________________ 1978 924 NA

Sounds like you may need to adjust your mixture, Ryan - running a bit lean?
No, the Dynomax bullets hardly do more than take the edge off the Loud. The Thrush was what was needed to really calm it down. _________________ Vaughan Scott

sorry to hijakc the thread,
but what is it that makes you think Im running lean? Is the burble a symptom of a lean mixture? I will check the plugs tomorrow and see what they look like.
