To confirm to the non believers and to show that the Haynes manual is correct, I have stripped my 1980 931 euro engine and found that:- Yes, Only one compression ring and the oil scraper rings are fitted to all 4 pistons. The pistons have place for a second compression ring. The current compression ring is not in the top groove but the middle. This is the first time the engine has been opened up.

I will now fit the 3 ring kit, as the pistons are perfect, but I do have some bore damage. My car was build in Jan 1980 and was factory owned, maybe a staff member's car till March 1981, when it was imported to South Africa. It's first 3 services were done at the factory.

I have decided to resleeve the block (cost issue) and use the standard 7.5:1 pistons with new rings. I'll have to skim the block and head, ever so slightly, a bit of warp between bore 2 and 3 because of head gasket failure.

Bearings are still in spec, but I will replace all.

All will now go back with the FMIC from Outofthebox and boost turned up a bit to 0.85 untill I sort out a better injection/O2 sensor set up.
