I was curious if anyone has replaced the lower shift linkage bushings on a 1979 5-speed (the set up where reverse is where 1st sometimes is-I believe 016z? I read somewhere they are above the transmission(?) and can be difficult - but not impossible to get to. The shift lever flops to one side - it's still engaged in gear but it gets difficult to find where the heck you are when you shift to the next gear. I did replace the upper bushings by the lever itself which did nothing for this - I did not expect iot to but stranger things have happened. Also if anyone has ideas on where I might find these bushings - my local Porsche shop could not get them for some reason. As always your help is most appreciated!
thanks very much

many of the board members have replaced them, they are the same as the 928 bushings www.928intl.com or 924 style, sorry no website,
I would recommend that you drop the tranny and replace the ball cup bushing as well. It is on the torque tube.
and yes where R is top left that would be a 016/Z tranny _________________ 3 928s, |

Hi B
It does sound like your shifter linkage rods "bushings" to me,
I had the exact same problem, I just had my done.
In theory you must drop the transmission to gain access to the rods at the point where they meet the transmission.
The actual bushings cost $5 a piece cdn where I live,
you will need two at the back, where it meets the trans.
My mechanic actually cut though the body under the rear "seats" to gain access to the bushing area we didn't want to have to drop the trans, be careful if you attemp it, he cut the brake lines while cuttting through,
once he had it open it was a cinch to install them.
Luckily I only paid $40 for labour and $10 for parts compared to $6-700 dollars to drop and insert trans for 10 dollars worth of plastic
unfortunately for me though, now my clutch seems to be dead.
good luck

Thanks
Peter sorry about your clutch --- I have been toying with the idea of doing it myself - the alternative so far has been limited - $70/hr at one place to 80-90/hr at another - so far - they seem to think about 2 hours labor. That's a lot to replace a couple of relatively inexpensive bushings |

I did read somewhere that it might be able to get it done by getting your hands up around the side of the trans to where the shifter rod meets the trans and slide in the bushings but I'll bet that would be really hard to do unless you have seen what it looks like in there. or have done it before.
The hole we cut is still not welded back in my 924 , I could send you a pic if you wanted to see what it looks like in there.
After watching my mechanic , they do slide in easy its just getting into that area that is hard.
good luck

you can undo the bolt which holds the rod onto the shift lever going into the tranny with the tranny in place, but you cannot remove the rod without removing the tranny, and well you have to get that rod out to be able to press that pin out and in.
it is not hard to pull the tranny on these cars, _________________ 3 928s, |

Paul from this board had posted this to an earlier question I had about shifter likage rods..
"The snailshell trans also can suffer from wear in the linkage, but is less likely to require replacement of metal parts. In this case, only bushings must be replaced. However, some of them are less easy to get at than with the Audi design trans.
Easiest to access are the bushings at the shifter; 4 identical bushings accessed simply by pulling up the shift boot. Part number for these is 999 924 002 40. Simply remove the e-clips (2) holding the shift rods to the shift lever, remove the old bushings, and slide in the new bushings.
The bushings back at the transmission, accessible only from underneath the car (reaching around to the top side of the transmission are harder to change. The are part # 911 424 223 03. They are also used on the 914, and can be purchased from more common sources like Performance Products as such (914 shift linkage bushings). In this case, the cross pin holding the joint together (it's designed like a u-joint) must be driven out to one side. Then the joint is separated. A 13mm bolt is removed and the aluminum joint casting can then be removed from the car. The plastic bushings can be replaced by hand at this point."

gentlemen
I don't know how to post pics here so, sean or anyone else send me your email addresses and I'll send pics of the hole we cut to access the bushings or tell me how to post pics and I'll do that.
