I replaced the cam oiler elbow, but now I messed up the timing as I had to remove and rotate the distributer to allow me to take off the valve cover. The first time I started it, the RPMs were something like 2400! I rotated the distributor and got it down to about 800, but anymore and the car would die. It seemed like the car would either be at 2400 or 800, but not inbetween. Do I need to get it to the 800, then adjust the idle speed? What should I have the screw at to begin with (e.g. 2 full turns out)? This was also with a cold engine.

Thanks,

I have a timing light and tach. I guess my problem is that with a slight turn of the dizzy, the RPMs are either 2400 (it has gotten better with about 1600) and 800. When at 800, I adjusted the idle and it got to about 950-1000, but couldn't see any timing marks on the flywheel. Should I set the idle screw at a minimum or leave where it is and adjust once timing is set? I assume that the timing is pretty close as the car starts and stays running.

look for the notch on the crank pully and get a white paint marker and mark it, then use the timing light with that as a referance.

Same as a picture shown in the Haynes manual. I'll try that tomorrow.

Is it possible to use the camshaft pully and valve cover or just stick with crank?

It is possible; Smoothie had a photo of the cam pulley marked with timing points, but I wouldn't recommend it. Use the crank or, better still, the proper timing marks on the flywheel.
