As I stated in another post, I finally got the 81 931 I just bought running. I can't drive the car yet because the hydraulics (brake and clutch) were shot. These parts are on their way. While I am waiting, the PO gave me a full set of belts (timing, alt, etc) and a brand new valve cover gasket set.

Since this car has been sitting since 2001, I figure I should go ahead and change the belts, adjust the valves, and replace the valve cover gasket. Valve adjustment sounds simple. I found plenty of info on this board about doing that. But what about the timing belt? Is there any special tensioning tools like on a 944? What about rollers? Do I have to pull the fuel distributor to get the belt cover off?

The belt is easy, its a VW design... The tensioner has 2 holes in it for adjusting so a pin wrench is nice but it can be done without the tool. The 90 degree belt twist method works fine.

Just remove the entire air cleaner and the rubber boot between the air cleaner and air metering unit for access to the cover. You will need to remove the water pump belt and A/C belt before removing the cover.

All stock 931s are interference engines so be very careful!!!

If the timing belt has also been sitting since 2001, you may want to spend a few bucks on a newer belt. At least check it to make sure it hasn't turned brittle or is cracking from age.
