Well on my way to this job, about 15 min outside of stewart actually my wistler 1650 decided to kick the cat, I know it is a problem with the electrical cord and where is goes into the unit.
however I picked it up at a fleemarket for $20 almost 3 years ago and it had paid for itself many times over, but the local police are getting better equipment and I am finding that it wasnt giving enough warning
so I ended up getting myself a Valentine 1 radar detector and it has arrive just in time for me to drive back down to the coast, with alittle extra piece of mind.
does anyone else have one of these units
or what are you guys using. _________________ 3 928s, |

I've always thought about it, I am a habitual speeder I'm ashamed to say, had my share of tickets.
Are they legal? They won't help with photo radar will they? _________________ 1987 951 - M193 Version for Japan |

I know that they are legal in BC, I have heard that they are not legal in alberta but I have no idea, I have only been there once and we had a radar detector on in the vehicle, though we never got caught,
they do work with photo radar as photo radar is always running a radar signal so it gives a good warning, though we no longer have it in BC, as too many politicians were getting caught.
and out here we RARELY see laser, I have only seen it 3 times, and two of those were in the same spot, but the areas they choose out here for laser they do during heavy traffic times, so all the traffic is already going slow and they dont really nail anyone. _________________ 3 928s, |

I never have owned one, but I've watched many people get a ticket within a few weeks of buying a radar detector. _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"

Detectors are illegal in the whole of Oz, as far as I know. I know the cops started using laser units instead of radar but I'm not sure how widespread the use is. Probably still the odd radar floating about. But in our cities (as least in Brisbane), the cops use those mobile cameras mounted in trucks that they park on the side of the road... you rarely (if ever?) see a cop standing out with a "speed gun" anymore. I'm not sure if those camera units use radar or laser?
An interesting side note in todays news in Oz...
It's long been said that if people would take every ticket to court -even if there was no chance of winning -rather than just paying the fine, the system would collapse pretty quickly. It'd simply eat up too much of the courts time. Unfortunately, for people like me, it's usually easier to just pay it than hire a solicitor/lawyer and take time off work, etc... _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

Well I dont rely on the detectors entirely, and Khal you dont actually have to show upto the court case, if you just despute it, that plugs up the system too,
and most of the people who get a ticket right away normally get one of the cheaper units,
and all the radar vans are radar, they cannot be laser as laser has to be aimed by a human every time. _________________ 3 928s, |

I think I see what you're saying but not sure it's true that you don't have to turn up to the court hearing. Perhaps in Canada but I don't think so in Oz. If you elect to have a court hearing, I'm pretty sure you have to be there personally. If you didn't it's likely that they'd just rule against you and lump you with court costs while they're at it... _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

That's exactly what would happen in the UK. I'm no expert, but I would guess the Australian system is likey to be based in the British system. _________________ 1985 Porsche 924 'Lux', Kalahari Beige (my ex)

interesting here in canada they would just rule you as guilty, but they do not nail you with any extra costs. _________________ 3 928s, |

In the US, the ticket is also a summons to appear in court. You waive your right to a hearing by simply paying the fine (which is a guilty plea).
If you don't mail in the payment and don't appear in court, you would be found guilty, would be fined for contempt, and a bench warrant could be issued for you arrest and if the judge is in a really bad mood he could order your license suspended.
If you aren't going to pay the fine, it's best to make an appearance in court _________________ -Stu

There is a glimmer of hope. The officer is required to appear. If he doesn't show, the case is dismissed.
Now, here's the part where it will all make sense.
Even if you choose to waive your right to a court appearance and mail in the payment, you must still pay the court costs which in many cases may exceed the amount of the actual fine.
Is this a great country or what _________________ -Stu
