I think the base model had a version of our beloved 2 liter motor....



Or is this the the prototype for the Cayenne?

Hey that rear end looks like my 928. Actually a grain of truth may be that AMC was visiting the Porsche and Audi plants when the 928 body was being designed in 72-73.

haha, that's exactly what I was thinking, the first pic the rear end reminds me of the 928.

Actually, Tony Lapine once stated his design for the 928 was indeed inspired by the AMC Pacer, of all things.

I used to own a 928S, and believe me, the fact that the design was inspired by the Pacer had no influence on the amount of enjoyment I was able to wring out of that car!

Just had another look at the Projeck 928 document/pictures and the early versions of the 928 rearend looked more like the Datsun 260Z.

that is an amazing book and a real collectors item, I think it sells for about $250 USD :O
