On my 78 and 79 the shifter lever is different. I took the rear of the seat material and made a new boot cover. I also cut 1" off the shift lever with a cut off wheel added new notches and cut the shaft down each side. Ended up with a shorter shift lever, that works and feels good.
Both shift knobs pull off, with some force. If the plastic plate is lose I have seen post where it is screwed down.
I remember you commenting about slopy shifting, was the bushing still in good shape and did you solve that porblem?
I found an Audi 5000 Throtle Body at the salvage yard. On my 78 it has more pull in 2nd and 3rd. Can now pull from 1200 in 3rd. Had to add a hole and tube for ignition advance, but is fit on intake and rubber boot also worked.
Let me know how yours is running.

well this 924 i just bought has been sitting since 2004 so I am guessing the fluid in the tranny is bad, but i dont have that special tool to drain it and refill it And as for the shifting well lets just say I always have to go back into 2nd gear before putting it in 1st or reverse or it will grind really bad. Pulled off shifter with all my might and it broke in half, the rubber shift knob is broken now so I just siliconed it for now, I will replace it soon but hey I can still drive it and I love this car! _________________ 2000 Cavalier Z24 imposter

Sounds like the tranny needs some more oil, mine did that when the level was low (It had stopped leaking so I assume it had run out...) _________________ 1994 Lotus Esprit S4 - Work in progress...

Usually there is a clip at the base of the shifter that holds it in place; remove the clip, and the whole knob pulls right off straight up. There's a thread on rennlist with some pics, but you need to be a member to view them.
If I remember correctly, the '79 5-speed boot is similar (if not interchangeable) with the later 5-speeds. You can source a replacement from Paragon Products, rennbay, or the like. They're all made by AGLA - Alan Gunn Leather. You may wish to do your steering wheel too, or have it done, once you see the improvement.
I did both of mine ('82 931 5-speed). The shift boot wasn't too bad IMO, though many have trouble with it; once the shift insert is removed (pry carefully), you can peel back the top, and slide the shift knob out the top. Install is tricky only in getting the top of the boot all stuffed in under shift pattern insert, which holds it in place. BTW, if you break or get tired of the insert - rennbay sells some really nice replacements; while they don't I believe have a replacement for the snailshell pattern, they do have other VERY nice ones, including a Porsche emblem, brushed stainless, etc.
A new shift boot, since it covers the knob itself, really feels nice. Well worth it. You may need to replace your knob; consider replacing the rubber grommets that hold it in place too.
As for your shifting, you may have bigger problems. Search under snailshell shift linkage; there's some parts (bushings) that wear out and must be replaced. Do not postpone this repair; if you fail to fix the problem, continuing to drive the car can damage the gearbox irreparably, as gearsets are VERY expensive ($1k per each one you destroy). Synchros are hard to find, but can be found - EBSracing.com has some, but you have to call. Again, do not postpone this repair, or you'll be replacing the trans and converting to an Audi box. That requires replacement of the torque tube as well, and potentially the rear suspension. My '79 (the racecar) was destroyed when I got it, gave up on the rebuild attempt and converted. _________________ Vaughan Scott

Forgot to add - rear hatch struts, again Paragon Products, maybe rennbay, other such sources. You must replace both at the same time; if you don't, you will end up twisting the hatch and the glass will separate from the frame and leak. _________________ Vaughan Scott
