OK, (Odo repair)
now, I'm sure I'm probably just looking at the wrong guide, but the guide I followed (pelican website) talked about pulling out a shaft, but the workings of the Odo I have in front of me aren't like that. Can anyone help soonish before I pop it all back in and pretend I didn't start?
so, here's a pic of the prob:
the red cog is supposed to mate to a white worm screw underneath to make the numbers turn. it seems to have slipped sideways, I can push the shaft back this way to make the two mate, but as I found when I did this and put it back into the car, it just moves over again in no time. what is causing the move, is there a missing spacer, or is there some other problem?
here's a pic from above..
on this pic I've pointed the arrow at the space that the red cog moves over to.
any help appreciated! P _________________ 1998 BMW Z3 2.8 arctic silver & red

Did anything fall out when you opened it up? Did it rattle? I couldn't say for sure, but would assume that a gap that size would definately have some sort of spacer or bush in it.
Could you possibly fashion a spacer of your own from washers/plastic strip etc?
Sorry. I'm not helping am I! _________________ Pete

Its a bit of a bugger. I had a spare speedo in the garage until this morning. Sold it on eBay and posted it out!
How easy is it to get the speedo out? I could maybe have a look at mine. _________________ Pete

What a palava that was. Haynes says "reach behind the dashboard and push out the unit, then disconnect the wiring". Yeah right!
It would seem my speedo is exactly the same as yours is Sean. The red plastic cogwheel looks to be an interference fit onto the metal shaft.
I would say you have two options really. Try to "modify" your odo' with washers or similar to stop the movement or maybe attempt to glue the cog back in place, or find a replacement speedo.
Of course there is the third option of doing nothing and selling your car on when the time comes as a very low mileage car!! _________________ Pete

| I had the same problem although my gear was white nylon. The problem with mine was that the gear had cracked which caused it to loosen on the shaft. Maybe others here have fixed it but I would just get another speedo depending on price of them there. Saves a lot of time srewin around with those tiny gears. Either that or find a strong glue that will stick to nylon and metal if it exists. There may be other ways but probably not worth the effort. |

MIne is the same.
I fitted a 4mm nut in as a spacer but it still is erratic, works when it wants.
It needs glue.
I'd use a rotary burring tool like a dremel to etch the metal shaft and use a good epoxy to glue it on.
I'll be doing this to mine when it comes out again. _________________ Porsche 924 1984 (UK import) NA

Glue it on in the position you need it at.
I had to do that with mine.

If you're careful not to spray it everywhere, a drop of Super-glue on the shaft might help. Slide the cog on sharpish and hold it there for a minute.
How many miles is your car going to lose when the speedo goes back, Sean? ... Only kidding! _________________ 1985 Porsche 924 'Lux', Kalahari Beige (my ex)

hey, if anything I'm gonna add miles on to make the car more authentic!
anyway, I mustn't have explained correctly. The problem is that the whole shaft moves backwards and forwards. The cog is rock solid on the shaft, but the shaft is moving - I'm tempted by the 'nut as a spacer' idea, or I had wondered if a small tiewrap would fit in there and work as a spacer, that way I wouldn't have to remove the cog to do the work (in theory!) _________________ 1998 BMW Z3 2.8 arctic silver & red

Where's the other end of the shaft. Can you get to that end, Sean?
Otherwise, the tiewrap idea is quite good, provided you can cut the end off close to the shaft so it doesn't flap about. You definitely don't want to pull the cog off if it's aleady fixed! _________________ 1985 Porsche 924 'Lux', Kalahari Beige (my ex)

am at work or I'd take a quick pic of the other end of the shaft. The other end has a brass coloured end on it. The shaft appears to be in the correct place when this brass coloured end is flush with the odo unit. When the shaft moves, the brass end comes outwards - i.e. away from the end where the red cog is. Ideally I'd fix something around the brass thing to stop it travelling, but there's plastic casing from the speedo in the way of it. well, not enough in the way of it! - it may be possible to attach something at that end but its gonna be tricky getting in there. Anyone know any 'borrowers' _________________ 1998 BMW Z3 2.8 arctic silver & red

Is there a chance of putting something flat against the odo body to keep the brass end from poking out? _________________ 1985 Porsche 924 'Lux', Kalahari Beige (my ex)

it doesn't actually (er think of right term!) countersink into the odo body, it sits proud about 4mm (guess!) - so I'd have to build something! - or wedge something in there between it and the plastic housing... - wish I had a pic to hand... _________________ 1998 BMW Z3 2.8 arctic silver & red

I think all the white ones are original and the red are repos. I would glue it on and it worked for me. Speedo broke around 70-75 thou.
I have a red one for sale if anyone wants one. _________________ "Never let them see you sweat"
