Question for the oil guys out there:
If I wanted to change a car from an owners' manual recommended 5W-20 synthetic blend to a fully synthetic 5W-20, would that be a problem?
Thanks, _________________ Rob

| On older engines the thinner syn oils can cause leaks. |

I guess I am asking because I have a 2003 Ford Windstar minivan. I wouldn't think of putting synthetic in my 924 until I rebuild the engine...way in the future! _________________ Rob

Synthetics have a high detergent content which will remove any sludge that has formed around main and cam seals. If the seals are old you will probably see leakage after switching to synthetics.

I'm 100% for going to syn oil! If possible, do an engine flush before you drain the old oil out, it will help flush out some of the sludge to make your first syn oil change a little less "contaminated" by the old oil and sludge. _________________ '80 931 FOR SALE

I was thinking of using synthetic in my 944 but it's high milliage so I don't think it's a good idea even though there is no oil leaking right now.
otherwise in a new engine synthetic is a good idea plus you will have to do less oil changes so it isn't that much more expensive. I would think if synthetic blend doesn't cause any leaks in your engine full sythetic wouldn't leak also. At least it sounds logical I've never tried it. _________________ 78 924 sold.

Be careful with those harsh solvent oil flushes. Generally, they are a bad idea and not recommended. They can possibly break off larger chunks of sludge or debris, which can clog oil pump pickups or oil passages. _________________ Andrew

| I'll be the guinea pig. I put 5W50 synthetic in my '79 924 last weekend . It was running 20W50 I think. Anyway, I'll let ya'll know how it goes. So far no leaks or oil consumption, but I just did a 120 mile round trip high speed run tonight so I'll check the oil level and look for leaks tomorrow ....but so far no drips and the engine feels nice and tight soooooo...I guess we'll see !! |

| Over 2 weeks later and still no leaks...engine is still tight. Not burning or losing any oil. |

I read somewhere recently (the PCA newsletter?) that Porsche recommends 0W-40 Mobil 1 for all models, regardless of age... _________________ '80 924 Turbo |
