have asked this in the how-to section to, but perhaps this area is more often looked at.

I need to remove the steering wheel so I can have a go at fixing the odo, and haven't tried to remove one like this before. I have done the lozenge type wheels before. How do I safely remove all the horn etc without breaking anything!

type of wheel shown here:

The horn pad just pops off and then you will see the nut to remove the wheel. The only care you need to take is that the horn wire is connected to the pad so you want to take some care not to break the wire.

Making a mark on the outside of wheel column will ensure that it goes back on properly aligned.

(on my cars, the nut came off pretty easily. If yours doesn't, you will need to brace the wheel to get it loose and others will have to advise you on how to do that)

After removing the horn push-Loosen off the nut but leave it on the shaft.
Pull on the wheel until it comes loose. A good pull top and bottom and then the sides and just keep it up till its loose.
Remove nut and wheel.
(prevents you getting a face full of wheel)

I'll wager thats the voice (typing?) of experience! I know I've done it more than once.

Getting the wheel off is the easy bit. Wait 'til you get to unplugging all the switch gear... and if you though that was bad, wait until you try to put it back together!

he he he, cheers guys, got the wheel off OK, thought I'd fixed the speedo so its all been back together again and out for a test drive and back into pieces since I realised how short term the 'fix' I did was....

still trying to work out the best way to space out that cog (see other thread)

Why did you ever remove the steering wheel to get the speedo out. It is not necessary. I have removed about 6 speedos and never had a problem. I also switched the speedo spot with the tack and vs versa.

CAUTION......If you attempt to remove 24 mm nut with a breaker bar be careful not to hit the windshield when it breaks loose. NO I never hit the windshield. Almost.

just made it easier.

and as for swapping the tach and the speedo, I'd like to, but the cable which comes off the back of the speedo and plugs into the tach won't reach - is there a way around that?

EDIT: p.s. it'd be hard to hit the windscreen with a breaker bar while loosening the wheel in a Right hand drive
