My windshield is leaking around the seal like there's no tomorrow. I could probably push the glass out by hand the seal is so bad. Rather than screw around with re-sealing it, I got a quote from Safelite for $230 for a new windshield and installation (they'll come to me even). My original windshield has 26 years worth of scratches and rock chips, so new glass sounds like a nice idea.

Question is - how is the quality of the Safelite glass? Is it identical to stock? Mine is very slightly tinted by the factory (I think this is part of the "touring package" on early cars, and the option became standard on the later models?). Does the Safelite glass have the same tint? If the Safelite glass stinks, then I'm tempted to try and polish the original glass and reseal it.

Cheers!

From my understanding, all glass sold these days has a tint. When I got my wifes Subaru windshield replace the company I used asked about a the options on my car because some had tint at the top and some did not, but all had some tint throughout.

I am pretty postive that you will get a very very similar tint, even more if you ask.

on a side (but related) note, this happened to me:

a.) drive behind a state or local roads truck
b.) suddenly, a small rock will fly from the dump truck and hit the windshield
c.) this results in a spider crack that stretches from a-pilar to a-pilar.
d.) take a picture and sent it to the roads department asking for another windshield.
e.) received a check 3 weeks later and never had to claim it with insurance

I'm not promoting dishonesty, just warning everyone not to drive too close to your local roads trucks.

I've used them a couple of times, no issues. I'll use them again.

The last one I ordered for a 924 was only available with green tinting (on the top of the windshield only).

In the case of my cars, after removing the old windshield they spent quite awhile cleaning the frame. Then they installed a thick bead of hot glue and then used suction cups to pick up the windshield and push it into the glue.

Works fine. Probably will have a small PPG logo somewhere as the actual manufacturer. So how bad could it be?

$230 installed is the going rate.

Glasurit windshields are absolutely not worth the extra. Would be twice the price if not more.

Sounds like a good price. I just got quoted $358 + $200 extra for the molding if it needs one. A bit too high for me.
