I have FINALLY taken to task and completed the needed repairs to get my 931 mobile again. I have to say, I have dearly missed driving my 931, and now I remember why.
Repairs completed:
Transmission replacement (
Axle shaft CVs rebuilt
Replaced most of the seals in the intake from turbo to TB
New shifter bushings (made my own) and a Heim Joint for the lower linkage
short shifter (also made myself)
The big improvement was first the replaced shifter linkage bushings... I've never felt such a tight shift in any car I've ever driven...
and second, sealing up the pressure tubes properly. I made my own gasket using gasket material donated by Lizard, and also replaced the turbo-to-lower pressure tube O-Ring.
Now, when I push the loud pedal while out of gear, I actually read boost on the gauge! Even better, while driving, rather than reading 5 Lbs of boost at 4000RPM, boost starts to read at 2400RPM, full boost comes in at 2900RPM, and 3000RPM = HANG ON!
WOW WOW WOW!!!
I love it more than ever!
To Do:
replace:
cam oiler tube elbow (read my post in the Parts section)
windshield
right fender
seal all oil leaks at turbo
radiator
heater valve
coolant reservoir (944-style)
tires
seats
carpets
rebuild:
turbocharger _________________ '80 931 FOR SALE

Did you change your trans to a used dog-leg one or did you convert to Audi-style? _________________ '83 924 2.6 16v Turbo, 470hp

The car came stock w/ a G31, and I bought another used G31 from Lizard, which is still waiting to be installed. A broken bolt has to be removed before I can install the better of the 2 trannies. In the meantime, I've learned to deal with the 2nd gear by just not downshifting into 2nd until a certain speed. _________________ '80 931 FOR SALE

Munk,
How did you make your own shifter bushings? I'd love to see that as a how-to. I'm going to have to do mine soon! Thanks. |

Oddly my G31 only grinds 2nd on the upshift, it downshifts fine. _________________ Toofah King Bad

Oh, and sorry to hijack, Monk, CONGRATS! I know the feeling. . .my 31 was parked for a while, too, and it is a JOY to be wheeling it again! _________________ Toofah King Bad

It is not an easy job, I have never tried it with the tranny in the car. Some of us have cut a hole in the floor to access it, but I highly recommend avoiding that method.
How far does your shift lever move left to right when in neutral? How far does it move left to right when the car is in second gear? _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"

I presume we are talking about parts not shown exploded in this diagram?
Weird, eh? 911 424 223 03 isn't even listed in the 24 PET... _________________ Toofah King Bad
