During the recent alignment it was pointed out to me that one of the rear shocks were leaking. So after the sticker shock and some surfing I'm wondering what difference there is between a Koni Sport and say for instance the local auto parts KYB model, other than $200. / shock.
I'm running 225/50 - 16 all around and things are close but no rubs and I'd like to keep it that way. |

the shocks in the rear will have no effect on rubbing /clearance issues, that is all to do with the torsion bar settings.
as per the difference in shocks there is a big difference if you plan on AutoX the car, or tracking it, or do alot of very spirited driving, if on the other hand it is a grocery getter and not pushed to the limit, then the KYBs might just be all that is needed for you. _________________ 3 928s, |

If the stiffness of the shocks keeping the suspension from full travel is the only thing keeping your tires from rubbing on the fender lips, then your tires are too wide. You need to roll the fenders lips or get narrower tires.
KYBs are less expensive for a reason. While they will appear to be alomst as stiff as Koni Sports or Bilsteins when new, KYBs do not last that long. In a year or so, they will soften as they break-in and you will be exactly where you are now, or worse.
The longest lasting shocks are Bilsteins, Konis, and Boge Turbo Gas (in that order). The domestic (Gabriel and Monroe) will not last as long as the KYBs. KYB actually has several products (Gas-Adjust is the least expensive, and the GR-2 is a more expensive product).
If you are planning on getting rid of the car in a year, or replacing the shock again next year, and are tight on money now, cheap shocks may be the way to go. If you are planning on keeping your car, spend the money to get something that will last longer. |
