Ok, there has been some talk about putting together a thread which would ask as an introduction to new 924 owners. on the list of ideas are car history, advice, interesting stories, mechanical goodies, and so on and so forth.
first of all though we are going to put toghether a checklist (hopefully arranged in order of priority). so please, share some of your knowledge about things that needs to be done immidietly after getting a new car. anyone can post as no advice will be dissregarded.
ill start us off with the easy ones.
provided that the seller doesnt have any information regarding changes or if the car has been standing still for long
1. Oil filter
2. Fuel filter
3. Air filter
another thing that is very important concidering it's such an old car is greasing up the ball bearings in all wheels. these bearings will run out of grease and eventually brake, several hundred dollars..

2nd ground strap from motor to chassis + rewire alternator/starter motor loom to battery...
clean all ground points
ensure all fuses are in place and clean contacts for fuses at fusebox - check to see if any relays have corrosion on their pins...
flush cooling system
change transmission fluid
inspect ball joints, change tie rods/rod ends , check rear ride height is level with front, check shock absorbers and have a wheel alignment done.

Water leaks at battery box.
Cam oiler elbow.
Timing belt tensioner.
Water pump.
I've found twice now that the 924 t-belt tensoner will warn of impending failure because the belt will start to 'walk' as the tensioner bearings start to fail. _________________ '88 944 Auto - may or may not resurrect |

Guys, this is fantastic stuff - I've just picked up my first 924, so am taking your suggestions and turning them into a complete list that I'll get right onto this weekend - if not earlier!
Keep it going...!

Oil change has been mentioned, but if you're not sure how regularly the PO has changed the oil in the past, I would recommend an engine flush (or two!) before changing the oil.
Apart from that, it's just a general thorough maintenance routine, as with any car with an unknown history. _________________ 1985 Porsche 924 'Lux', Kalahari Beige (my ex)

I assume you mean the intake manifold? I noticed a small amount of oil on my manifold last night - but running the engine didn't seem to produce any more. Not sure if PO did a sloppy oil top-up, or if it's something more sinister...?

No worries mate, oil in the intake is more of a concern for the turbo models since it usually means blown turbo seals. _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"
