|
|
Ok, it's about time to upgrade/replace the stereo in the 924S.
Going to replace the door speakers, upgrade to CD receiver, and install a power antenna...
I want to stick with Blaupunkt and was just going to order everything from Crutchfield. Does this sound like a good idea or are there much better prices somewhere else?
Also, Crutch sells a "stereo removal tool" for about $5. Is this necessary to get the old stereo out? They also sell a wiring harness kit ... is this necessary?
(When I did this with the 924, the stereo had already been replaced and I didn't have to deal with the factory change over).
Any advice/assistance would be appreciated. _________________ -Stu

I'd call around to your local shops to check prices.
I haven't bought from them but I almost did, they seem to have very fair prices. The shipping, quality and customer support could be unknowns and trouble... good luck. |

I had my dash out at the time...so I just ran totally new wiring and put in the new cd player. If you're not willing to go that far, maybe even pull the console and clean some things up while you're in there...my old wiring harness was a mess(aka gone) and it was "hardwired" with electrical tape and masking tape...Needless to say those all got ripped out, and the 12V and ground lines lost another inch of length. _________________ Mike

I don't believe 6x9's will fit in the doors without cutting some metal. I'm pretty sure it's either replace with the 4x6's or some have been able to put in 6" rounds? I haven't put any in my doors, so I'm not positive. Whatever the speaker, it needs to be a fairly thin speaker so it has enough depth. _________________ Mike

Crutch lists the 6x9s as the right size for the 924S but it didn't sound right. I've added a set of 4x6's that are listed for the 924. Can someone tell me if these look like the right fit?

They should go right in. They look just like a set I've got that came from a 924S. _________________ '80 924 n/a SOLD |

Ok, "stereo removel tool" is not necessary. Old coat hanger popped the stereo right out. Wiring looks pretty straight forward....
Speakers are definitely 4x6, don't know why Crutch lists 6x9. The driver door speaker completely disintegrated when I removed the cover.
I guess I may as well tackle the back speakers as part of this project although I'm really not looking forward to doing that again However, if I determine a rear re-wire is necessary, it will be much easier to do it now.
Just a matter of ordering the parts and finding a day to tackle this.... _________________ -Stu

Will the new head unit play MP3's?
I reckon if you get a new head unit you should get one that does MP3's... ~150 tracks on one disc! Cool
I'm pretty sure I saw one with a built in hard drive, like 80gigs of storage, iPod-style. That'd be pretty good, too. You could have your whole music collection on there. Dunno about durability, though.
You should see my head unit Talk about needing an upgrade! It's this crappy old cassette player I only listen to the radio on it. I doubt the cassette player works (don't have any cassettes anyway...) _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

>>>Will the new head unit play MP3's?
The one I'm looking at doesn't but it probably accepts the ipod adapter (most do since the adapter connects directly to a CD changer plug) so you can directly connect an ipod to the unit.
L8r that same day......
OK.. you got me thinking about it and I added the Blaupunkt Bermuda to the wish list... for $40 more it adds the MP3 player capability and it's probably worthwhile to go ahead and do that now....
That's why I love these boards _________________ -Stu

The next trick is to try and find one that'll play WMA as well!
WMA is Windows Media Audio format and from what I've read (and what I've heard -I use it), WMA produces better quality audio for the equivalent file size.
But I'm a bit of a Windows Media Player fan *ducks for cover* and my stuff's all setup to rip'n play WMA format, so it's pretty much personal preference.
MP3 is generally more compatible with new consumer electronics... _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

did you have any luck installing the new stereo? I'm planning on doing the same but i was wondering if I need to add Harnesses? or just hardwire?
I went to Best Buy and they say i should use harnesses. The local Car Stereo store said they could wire it directly. I think that harness route makes it easier to change the stereo in the future (although i don't plan on doing that at all). The hardwire is obviously cheaper.. any recommendations?
thanks
also re: stereo's and mp3/ipod .. most of the newer head units are offering ipod integration, which is cool because you can store your ipod in the glove compartment and then control it directly from the head unit (although it's around $100 for the ipod adapter). I'm on a super budget and prefer the alternative, which is getting a head unit with an Aux-In right on the front (sony has one for around $100 total!) They even have units now with USB interfaces right on the front as well so you could, say, copy mp3's right to a jump drive and then plug it into the unit. I think that's pretty slick, but to each their own
cheers! _________________ Porsche 924 - 1982 - Northern Cali |

On Hold. I was all set to do it when it (the 924S) came out of the shop and then the 924 had to go in for the clutch. Can't tear up the 924S until I get the 924 back
I will probably order the wiring harness kit in hopes of making a "more professional" install. I'll keep ya posted..... _________________ -Stu

Ya know jpub I agree the usb way is way cool... I
get all my music from the web ... lime wire..or musics choice
get a harness and a sub n amp maybe make a box in the rear
seat area with cover and some rail Soo itll keep the subs n
speakers dry and protected ... thinking of coveren the box with
black vinyl. 6x9 wont fit in the doors I dont want anything in
my doors anymore. Im thinken of maken a light weight box to
fit in that area like you see the man do on the high profile
custom shop Unique. _________________ 1979 porsche 924 Na
