I got my head off, the gasket was cracked by a water passage by the number 4 piston, as usual I guess. More concerning is that I have 3 exhaust valves that are all cracked in multiple places, 2-3 wedge shaped cracks per valve running radially out from the center. I have read that this can be caused by cracked valve seats, but I don't see any cracks unless they are microscopic (possible) and I still have a hard time beliving that all of my exhaust valve seats are cracked in multiple places (still possible). I know on my motorcycle, which also has valves that you have to manually adjust, misadjusted valves won't get enough contact time with the valve seats for them to cool down, is this possible on the 924? Also, one of the cam followers on the #2 piston has a slightly scratched up face although the cam seems to be fine for the most part. These things are $80 a piece! Can it be honed instead or will that mess up the timing on that valve? And finally, it looks like electrolysis has gotten the best of my thermostat housing as the holes are now bigger than the bolts. So I guess I'll also be posting something in the classifieds section looking for the aformentioned pieces, trying to save a buck or two.
Thanks,
Zac
