|
|
Hello,
I currently have a '77 924 and am looking at a cheap '82 for sale and was wondering what kind of parts are interchangeable. I know the Injection system is different. Is the cylinder head the exact same? Will the engine bolt right up to my bellhousing? wheels?
Thanks,
Max |

Many parts are the same, and many parts are different. Many of the parts that are different can be used to upgrade a 77, if the parts are still good.
The engine will bolt right on, BUT you will have to install most of the vaccum, ignition and fuel system parts from the 77, unless you are going to take all of the 82 parts from the 82 parts car.
Rear fenders, fuel tank, fuel lines, and vapor recovery system are different. Ventilation system is different, and not worth trying to swap.
82 5-speed manual transmission is a bolt-on upgrade to the 77 4-speed. Front crossmember is the same, front sway bar and rear sway bar from the 82 are larger and a good upgrade. Headlight assemblies are the same. Doors, outside door handles, door latches are different and cannot be interchanged. Power windows from the 82 can be installed. Seats, and dashboard with instruments can be used. Glass is interchangable. Torque tube, torsion bar carrier (torsion bars are larger on the 82). Front fenders and hood can be used, along with the side marker lights, and tail lights. Front struts, cv axles, and brakes are compatible. |

thanks for the reply and lots of info
I will be using the '82 for parts so I will be updating the entire fuel system if I put the '82 engine in the '77. How involved is it electrical wise if I change the engine to an '82? |

If I were you, I would not change to the 82 ignition system. You will need to change a lot of parts, including the main wiring harness, which means you would also need to modified the 82 harness to work with the 77 electrical components under the dashboard, since you can't change to the 82 ventilation system.
You would also need to figure out how to make the 82 fuel system work with the 77 fuel system components. The 82 has (2) fuel pumps, and the 77 only has (1). The 77 may have a smog pump and one-way catalytic converter, whereas the 82 has a 3-way catalytic converter and no smog pump.
I am not saying that you can't put the 82 engine in with 82 ignition, fuel, and emissions systems, just that it will be a huge amount of work compare to stuffing the 82 engine long block into the 77 utilizing the 77 engine systems. |
