Just wondering what RPMs I should shift at during normal driving conditions. I have been shifting at 3-4k, but might need to wait a little longer. It does sound like the engine is racing when I shift, but that could also be the loud muffler.

Thanks,

what do you mean normal condition?

when you want to go slow you slowly push on the throtle and you shift under 3000 RPM

when you want to race you push the throtle all the way and you shift at 6000 RPM

i think the best time on a normal condition is 3500, sumtimes i hit 4000. when i race i take it all the way until i hit the tip of the red line

These engines are pretty rough. No doubt a loud exhaust system doesn't help. But these engines certainly aren't the smoothest things in the world. Unless it's making some pretty horrible noises, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Just learn to live with it.

In normal traffic, I usually shift under 3000rpm. But traffic moves pretty slow through the city here. The only exception is first gear, which I usually let run to 3500-4000rpm. Not for the acceleration, it's just because the gear is so low that if you shift into second before that, it drops really low in the revs... and you get a soccer-mum in a truck up your arse screaming obscenities at you while the car struggles to accelerate You shouldn't have that problem with the NA.

I'd say just drive it comfortably. If you like giving it a bit of a rev, then go for it! If you want to drive for economy, use light throttle and shift early. You'll be slow, though

Paul did a poll on this not long ago... here.

For the racing while shifting (if it actually exists), you could check the throttle - make sure the return spring is there, plus give it a shot of carb cleaner or wd-40 to ensure that the throttle isn't sticking open temporarily instead of closing right away.

There's also a device called the deceleration valve (sometimes referred to as the anti-backfire valve) - this lets some air in, bypassing the throttle when the throttle shuts to give the engine a more gradual deceleration between shifts. As I recall, it affects emissions by eliminating a spike in NOx each time the throttle snaps shut, plus it eliminates the backfires that would occur otherwise.
Anyway- It seems at least possible that if this valve is malfunctioning, it could have the opposite effect and open too wide, causing the engine to over-rev.

The possibility of the distributors' centrifugal advance sticking may be another thing to look into.

I read that wrong, didn't I?

I though you meant it sounded like it was revving harder than it was... sorry 'bout that.
